I just bought a 95 GST. My first turbo model I've owned.Car has been sitting for years. Less than 60k miles on the car. Started fixing it up and noticed this part is broken but I dont know what it does. Maybe part of the cruise control.
Can anyone confrm what its called?

Thanks.
Have another question? Previous owner said his kid ran it hot so he parked it and never messed with it. Been sitting for 13 years.
How can I tell if the rings are fried? I checked dry compression on each cylinder (50, 25,55,90). I dont know if that is good or bad on a motor that hasn't ran in 13 years.

Those readings are low for any engine.
Did you have the throttle wide open?
That will effect readings some, but most likely not enough.
You most likely have warped head or blown gasket??
PERFORM Leak down test and/or Borescope bores for bore polishing of cylinders(Lack of crosshatch).
This might also give you a bird's eye view of the valves and top of pistons for contact.
MAKE sure the CAM timing is Correct.
Rings could also be collapsed and loss tension from overheating.

I didn't have the throttle wide open. I'll test again. Head gasket makes better sense than rings. The spark plugs were all chalky white. Didnt appear to have any oil on them.
I'll also do a leak down test to confirm.

Thanks guys

Possible old coolant on plugs if crusty looking.
If you have pressure tester, you could also pressurize cooling system, let sit 4-6 hours, sometimes overnight needed, spin engine over w/ plugs out, see if coolant blows out any cylinders.
Might be a stuck exhaust valve, due to valve stem rust creating improper valve seat sealing. or even rusted seat.
Humidity is not good for/to engines sitting around with exhaust valve partially open, allowing exposure to atmospheric air.
That is why leak test will be more accurate lots of times.

Leak tested confirmed a blown head gasket. I'm tearing it down to change it out. I want to be sure I can time it back correctly. I can see the marks on the cam gears and the oil pump gear. But not sure about the crank gear. Is it lined up correctly in the attached pic.

With the dowel pins on the cam gears at 12 o’clock and the two marks on the cam gears lined up to each other (and even with the top of the head), it looks off a little but might be the angle of your pic. When you reassemble, make sure the front balance shaft is timed as well.

If you have another question, I recommend you start another thread (or just a simple search) as this one might get out of control if you keep adding to this.
