So just noticed on my 2g gsx when putting into reverse the reverse lights dont come on but if i move the shifter to a certain spot and hold it there then they come on! Could it be a bad switch?

I haven’t opened a 2g auto shifter assembly but I’d image they’re similar to others of that time period. If it works when you move the shifter, it’s most likely worn contacts and possibly repairable.

Does your shift indicator on the dash work properly?

I just got my backup lamps working on my 1g 5spd. It was just the switch, which was fairly easy to swap; just a web of various stuff to reach through. I did remove the old one and check continuity while pushing the end-ball to confirm it was shot, before ordering a new one (from JNZ). Other mfr's do sell knock-off's for less, too. The manual one gets a special washer, which I also replaced, based on recommendation of several dsm members. Not sure how any of this helps with a 2G auto...:aha:

Mine recently didn't come on. It was the switch. I got an aftermarket replacement at Autozone and that fixed it. First check to see if shorting the leads on the connector that plugs into the switch turns the reverse light on. If it does, it's the switch (assuming it's not something inside the trans).

Their mentioning a shifter suggests to me that it's a manual, whether FWD or AWD.

True but when someone says shifter it usually means it's a manual. I do agree that you need to spell out all the relevant specifics when asking for help with a problem.

Btw, my car won't start. Do you have any idea why? :aha:

So what does an auto person call it? :idontknow::D
