Hello my fellow DSMrs. I've got an issue I couldn't find in the forums. My 98 spyder gs with a 2.4 4g64 and auto trans has a grinding problem. It does it whenever the car is in motion. Increasing with speed. Even in neutral. I.e. coasting down a hill. I checked the wheel bearings, there fine. I'm very anxious to solve this issue as its getting worse. Any advice from our wise members would be most appreciated. Thank you

There are too many variables to conclude just one fix. It could be the transmission, axle. etc. Can you get a rough idea of where the noise is coming from? Maybe you could put the car on jack stands and have a friend listen for the grinding .. once you pinpoint where the noise is coming from you will have a better idea of what to do to fix it. I know a lady who took her van to a shop because she heard this funny noise. They told her she needed a complete brake system. I had a look and found some gravel stuck between the rotor and the shield on the front passenger side. After removing three small rocks her problem went away. Best of luck finding your gremlin..

Agreed with @Widgmaster completely. Gotta trace it as best you can to a location. He gave you a great piece of advice with jacking the car up and driving it in place. I would however have someone else drive while you search for the noise since you know what it sounds like. Also don't forget that some sounds like to travel, as in they are caused in one place, but sound like they're coming from another. Noise issues can sometimes be hard to pinpoint, so have patience. If you can't find it, have a beer, and have an extra set of eyes and ears help you out. Good luck.

Couple of questions does it “grind” the second you start moving or does it start at a certain speed? 30mph and on increasingly getting worse? Is it a metal/metal grinding sound or more of a growling sound? High pitch noise or more of a low groan? Did it happen out of nowhere or progressively get worse? Any recent work done?

Thanks for the tips gentlemen. Took it to a shop for some paid (expert) advice they went through the car and said it was because of old tires. I put 800 bucks worth of new tires on there recommendation. Still bad especially at freeway speeds. Sounds like a jet landing when I exit. Tires did help alot, but not with that specific "gremlin" oh well Back to the drawing board. I'll post when I find it:)

Any update as to when exactly the grinding happens? By the sound of it still leads to think wheel bearing. They can make noise without having any play in them. What have you done so far to diagnose the issue?
