Ok as title says I have a motor out of a 99gst I’m wanting to install in my 96 talon tsi. Is there anything different between those years? I know ecu in car is a 96 and only thing I can think of being different is the cam sensor on back of cam looked different in those 2 yrs. what do I need to know to do this? Tried searching no luck. Thanks in advance

The engine should swap in as far as I know.... I have no experience with the eagle talon part of DSM's but I know you can swap a 99 4g63t into a 96 without much, if any, modifications.

Talon tsi awd and eclipse Gsx exact same car besides some body trim and badges

Thank you guys for all the info. Reading through what’s different does it all need to be changed or is that just reference to what’s different? Like the abs stuff etc.

This information is assuming you are just dropping the motor in as is. If you have the old motor you could use some of the electronics from it if you choose. You either have to swap the cas and wiring or use the cas and components from the 96 if they are available. Both ways are viable options.

Would it be worth sources components off an early engine or just do some rewriting?

Ok so does starter relay need to be reworked to use 99 motor?
What is FP check connector?
What ecu should I run?
Is the Fuel tank diff sensor needed for 99 motor to run correctly?

Some of it also depends on your own preferences and parts available. I run a 6 bolt block and 2g head. Due to my preferences, I use a 1g main water pipe and thermostat housing just to make things visually cleaner. I also do this to gain a port on the main pipe to feed coolant to the turbo instead of putting a T-fitting into the rubber coolant lines. It all depends on what you want for your setup, and what you can get to fit and function properly.

Honesty just putting car back together so I can sell it. Buyer I had backed out last minute so I said screw it I’ll build car and then sell. Motor is 99 with 20g turbo, tial wastewater and dsm lightweight pullies. Ran well when pulled from 99gst. Now putting in my 96 awd

My bad, I got this post swapped with another one for some reason. Go ahead and ignore that last comment ROFLROFL:ohdamn:ROFLROFL
I Thought you where giving me advice putting it back together but I already have coolant feed going to turbo haha

Lol, yeah, I f@#ked that up. Been a couple days since I was last on. But anyway, I would use the same ECU that matches the engine, that way there's less swapping of parts to make it function properly, such as inverting the firing order and injector order. Make it easier for yourself since you're just gonna sell after.

Well shoot that ecu is gone. It also was for a GST not a Gsx does that matter?

So if I use an older ecu what do I need to rewire? Or rearrange and why? Sorry new to dsm but not new to modifying

Also have Apexi tuning devices I was going to use for fuel and boost so which ecu is easiest to fool? I know ideally obd1 but I am a 96 car. I do have a 1911 ecu and a 24xx I think the other one is outside of car. Including whatever is in the car. I’ve been collecting parts for a long time to build this car

No. The only difference between GST and GSX ECUs is the top speed allowed, and that's only a 5mph difference due to tire rating. As long as you use a 95/96 cam sensor with the 96 ECU, you shouldn't need to change anything else.

I don't know if any are easier to "fool" than others.

All 2G cars are OBDII.

Shoot ok looks like I’ll havw

shoot ok looks like I’ll have to source a 95/96 cam sensor. Sorry again but mentions in different locations? Does that mean I have to tap in different location for cam sensor or just change sensor itself out?

The 95/96 cam sensor is bolted to the head behind the intake cam gear. As long as those 2 bolt holes are there for it, you're good. You'll also have to buy the sensor "plug" for the spot the 97-99 cam sensor sits in. If you have the 96 engine wire harness already in the car, then you're good to go from there.

Dang sounds like a lot of work. Would it be easier to just use the 99 sensor? But if I did that I would need a 97-99 ecu?

That would be correct, but if your car is a 96 and has that wiring, You're better off swapping the sensors. It really isn't a lot of work at all.
Ok if I do that is there any issue just leaving the 99 sensor in to fill the hole? .

Ok I’m very confused and I’m sorry but want this swap to go smooth. Engine still out but want to install. I got to location where the CAS should be for a 96 motor on the 99 head. I see screw holes and were I believe it goes but there is no hole into head just aluminum about 1/2” in. Is this correct? Or in order to use a 96 cas does this need drilled out? Or can I just rewire the 99 cas on passenger side to work and rearrange plug firing order? Please someone help me out thank you

Just use a 1G CAS and you can bolt it into the normal CAS location on the 99 head. That head does not have bolt holes for a 96 cam sensor. If you use a 1G CAS, you won't need the 96 crank sensor either.
