Almost done restoring a 97 420A GS. Just need to re do the headliner and make sure any dings are out so I can re spray the entire car. The previous owner either had someone paint it, or they half assed painted it this burgundy color that had light spots from poor coverage. Paint was cracking and pealing off, assume they didn't prep the surface properly before painting.

The oem paint is the silver.

Since I'm restoring this and going to sell it, it doesn't really matter what "I" in particular think looks good. It's what others will think looks good who would buy this car is what matters. What would be a good color that would sell easier? The oem silver? Or like royal blue metallic or gunmetal grey metallic? And funny enough, my neighbors keep joking that I paint it the Fast and The Furious green, which then I tell them i'd have to turbo and tune the car if I did that LOL.

Speaking of headliners... anyone do theirs? And if you have, what brand did you use? Because I got some off Amazon and over the summer it started to sag. I used an entire can of glue too, so I don't know WTF happened. I also live in Las Vegas where it gets pretty hot.

Thanks!!

Are the jams and engine bay getting repainted as well? If not and they are still OEM silver I would stick to that just for ease of painting.

As for the headliner I used stockinteriors.com for the material and glue over 10 years ago. It still looks brand new. I believe it was 3M glue. You can get that stuff at autozone or any other brick and mortar store.

I am absolutely in the minority here, but I prioritize vibrant colors when car shopping. In college I tried to pick up a royal blue Talon because of the color, and prior to the acquisition of my current GSX I was looking at a yellow and an orange one. And last year I paid a $5k premium for a Miata because it was orange. Of the color options that you presented, I would completely ignore all but the blue if I saw it listed for sale. On the other hand, I know a guy here in Indy that spent months looking for a DSM to buy because it had to be the OE silver. That was the only color that he wanted.

About a month ago there were a couple articles that came out from places like AutoTrader saying that, at least for common, late model cars, color has no impact on resale value and people need to stop buying black, white, and silver cars just because they think they will be worth more down the road. Idk how well that translates to 90s Chrysler-designed compacts, but I think that as long as the paint job is high quality, it won't matter what color it is. There will be a buyer for it.

Changing colors and making it look right are 2 different things as @dsmcrzy has brought up. If you change the color and then open the hood or a door, I always like my cars to match. When restoring my old Camaro, we kept the same original color but sprayed the jams, trunk, under hood also so it would all be fresh and match. Something about opening a door to a Red car with silver jams just would turn me away and have me asking myself questions about the car that I wouldn't normally think of if it all matched. Just my .02¢

Any color is good just keep in mind do a full respray the entire car, your choice in color is up to you, but be thorouhg or it will look like a mess.

Yep tony ive had a different colors on my car white blue black, the bay is one thing maybe a black with any color, but the jambs was hard to keep looking at it.

I agree. Bay is alright to be a different color but jams are a no no LOL.

LoL love all the different opinions.

Whats funny is they painted the door jams the same color, and under the hood is painted black..smh... The engine bay is still silver. So I guess going OEM is the deal then. I have some hotrod black left over from my buddies motorcycle. I was thinking of maybe painting the windshield wipers that and the scratched up chrome trim that goes around the top of the front door windows. As well as the fog light delete and those bumper inserts that black. Because having those look like crap will kinda kill the paint job having nice paint with those looking all dingy. The car is stripped down already to have the jams resprayed because they did a poor job when doing the color change. So I was already planning on doing the jams the same color.

I used a full can of Permatex - Heavy Duty Auto headliner adhesive. I made sure the headliner was nice and smooth free of any debris. I sprayed the glue onto the headliner it self and then waited a sec to let it tack up a bit, nothing on the material. And then slowly layed the material out onto the headliner so It was uniform and smooth. I'll use 3M next go around. And thank you for the material resource @dsmcrzy!
