Back whenever I bought my GSX, it had an aftermarket head unit in it. I didn't really like the aftermarket unit so I bought the unit below. And someone before me cut the factory amp out of the car (literally cut the connector and pulled the amp out). Luckily I still have the wiring for the amp, just not the DIN cable. Now the radio powers on OK, I just have no sound. And I was wondering if I needed the amp to get sound, or if there was some other way I could get sound to come out? (And if I needed the amp, would I need the DIN cable, or just the amp connector?)
Thanks

Unfortunately you will need the amp to convert the lower level output of the radio to high levels needed to drive the speakers. Aftermarket radios have the amps built in which is why you can and should eliminate the oem amp. Try to get everything hooked up with the oem connectors and don't forget to solder and cover all the connections. No butt-connectors or crimp caps!

You don't need the amp. Just wire them directly. You only lose the tweeters in the dash without the amp.

Not on a stock headunit. The OEM outputs are low level. He’s have to crank up the volume and it would still just be a whisper.
It'll be little bit quieter but it'll still be fine and not as bad as you think. The stock amp runs in parallel to the speakers, vs in series, so it's not completely necessary and would be similar to cars without the infinity amp option.

Thanks for all the help and feedback!! I bought a factory amp, a 6 pin DIN cable, and an 18 pin connector from Metra. Now I have another question, the amp has 18 pins, the new Metra connector has 14 pins, and the OEM connector in my RS has 16 pins, and there are only 14 wires on my GSX where the amp plug used to be. So am I missing something?

I haven’t gone out to check mine, but it should be 16 at a minimum. Each of the 4 channels has a +/-, so 8 wires from HU to amp, then 8 wires from amp to speakers. I’m going based on memory though. Someone can correct me.

The amp may have an additional couple for a power signal, but again, based on memory.

You said you bought an 18 pin connector from Metra but then say the new Metra connector has 14 pins - so which is it?

I have the original 99 GST Infinity radio with CD and cassette head unit and amp under the passenger seat. The amp has the 18 pin speaker/power connector (probably like yours). 4 pins are for the 2 rear speakers, 4 pins are for the 2 door speakers, 4 pins are for the 2 front speakers, 2 pins for power, 2 pins for ground, 2 pins unused (pins 11,12).

The Metra connector is listed as an 18 pin connector, but in the photo underneath the amp, it only shows 14 pins installed into the connector. So, I'm not sure if the photo is just a generic advertising photo, or if it will actually have 18 pins installed. I think they just call it an 18 pin connector, because the connector can hold up to 18 pins.
Also, I figured out why my GSX only has 14 wires in the floor for the amp. Someone removed the 2 wires for the driver's rear speaker, and hard wired it, so that is why I'm missing 2 wires. And the amp connector in my RS looks the same as the one you posted, so I'll use that as a guideline.

I still have that same radio in my Spyder and I love it. Did you swap your car from auto, or do you just have an auto center console?
I knew someone would probably ask. I snagged it from an auto car from a local junkyard (a long time ago). My car came with (mostly) gray interior, and I'm going black. I still love the seats btw, now I just need the rears in black.

Just an update on this:
Everything was working fine, and then a while back my speakers made this loud pop, then there was no sound, then I had sound again, and I thought everything was alright. The sound I did have was very low, and I had to turn the volume up more than before. That's when I realized my rear speakers quit working.
I tested the rear speakers with a 9v battery to confirm they still work, and I also hooked up an aftermarket head unit I have laying around to also verify they work.
My guess is that one of the amp IC's/Audio Power Amplifier's is bad. I've taken the amp apart, and everything looks good. No burnt traces, no leaky capacitors, nothing. I don't know how to test components on the amp, I'm just guessing.
Another guess is that the rear channel audio out from the head unit itself is bad. Or the DIN cable went bad, only on the rear channels.
I'm not really sure what the problem is, but any advice or help would be appreciated!

UPDATE:

I bought a used factory amp of eBay, and it works!

I think the amp IC's are bad on the other amp, but I haven't done any testing on the working amp to verify.
I plan on buying some new IC's and replacing the old bad ones.
