Anyone used a Carter Stock Replacement fuel pump before? Made in the USA and I know they used to make decent carbs back in the day. Wasn't sure if anyone has had any experience with them before.... I know normally on a DSM the fuel pump gets replaced by a walbro or evo pump before it even goes bad but figured maybe someone knew if they still make decent stuff. Thanks

I bought a new Denso pump for my car, since that was the oem supplier when these cars were built. It cast around $120. When I was researching the matter, I saw plenty of other brands for much less, like $40 or so. I assume the Carter is in this latter price range. Likely it will perform just fine in a relatively stock setup. Their really not that difficult to swap, and a failing fuel pump isn’t likely to cause much collateral damage. Compare this to something like engine bearings or rings, which are not simple to swap, and can cause severe damage to lots of stuff if they fail. So perhaps worth a try.

I’m pretty sure Carter was absorbed by a larger company some years ago, and is now just a brand name slapped on parts made by any number of manufacturers, though that’s not to say their bad. Just not the same company that powered man muscle cars through the 60s.

You're suggesting that based on what criteria? I would think that with relatively stock performance level, an OEM-spec pump would not hold back the performance. A higher output fuel pump is essentially pumping the fuel in a circle most of the time (since the injectors aren't consuming it), and that imposes a slightly higher current demand on the electrical system. Then it comes down to cost vs. quality (reliability, longevity, etc.). I also see compatibility as a key ingredient, although with fuel pumps this may be less an issue. Still, everything has to fit right, or some level of "customizing" is required. Sometimes that's fun, sometimes very frustrating. I agree that upgrading the fuel pump appears to be one of the first mods folks do when looking toward higher performance, so the pump must reach it's limit with only moderate increases in power.

With little price difference between an oe style replacement to a good 255lph pump, it's almost a waste of money to put a stock one back in. Might as well just upgrade it and be done if your replacing it anyways.

If you can find a Walbro for around 40 bucks let me know. Spending 100 bucks on a fuel pump that will put out way more fuel than I will ever need doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not trying to cheap out, it's a turbo fuel pump going into an N/A circle track 4g63 so I'm only worried about reliability. The walbro's I have found usually only last a few years anyways.

If you want to trust a $40 fuel pump for racing purposes, then by all means be my guest. I do see that you're semi local to me, I've got two walbro 255s sitting on the shelf in my garage. I'll gladly give them to you if you want them. They came in a parts car I bought last year and I don't have any use for them. I'd have to test them to make sure they're good first though.
