I had a well-built DSM many years ago, but due to some unfortunate circumstances, I lost the car. 12 yrs later, I’m back in the game. I bought a friends car sight unseen in 2016. I knew it had a decent amount of mods. However, once the car was delivered, I realized the body of the car was in poor condition Also, the mods weren’t to my liking. The car ended up sitting for 3.5 yrs. I bought another project with the intention of building it up to my liking. That car came with a block, 3 cylinder heads, and some mods not installed. I decided I didn’t want to try to piece something together not knowing if all the little pieces were even there. I kept the parts I wanted, sold the roller and spare parts and started looking for a clean, complete car.

This is the original car I bought in 2016 but ultimately parted it out down to a bare roller.

The black cherry Talon is the roller I bought, but ended up selling it. Pretty clean. No rust for the most part.

This brings me to the current car I own. The acquisition story is long, but worth the read. It’s also one is those “damn, you got lucky” stories. A guy about 3 hours away had a 1993 Talon TSI AWD listed for $3900. Arizona car, completely rust free. Basic mods were tastefully done. Upgraded fuel system, DSMLink, exhaust, AEM digital boost gauge, AEM wideband. Brand new rims and tires. It seemed like a good starting point for a new project. Something I could enjoy right away.

We made arrangements for me to pick up the car. Drive the 3 hours there, see the car sitting outside, waiting. Guy says “got good news and bad news.” That’s never something you want to hear when you are planning on driving a car home 3 hours away. He says “the car starts and runs just fine, but it pops out of 5th gear.” I take the car out on a test drive, and sure enough, no 5th gear. Car runs great, 2nd gear is notchy, won’t stay in 5th.

We get back to the storage facility (where he was storing the car) and we notice a trail of fluid behind us. Upon further investigation, we see that the 5th gear shaft end nut backed off and wore a hole through the end case of the trans. (Later found out that the trans shop that replaced the clutch and resealed the trans case didn’t stake the end nut on the shaft, allowing it to back out and through the trans case). The seller asks me what I want to do. I’m like “I like the car but I can’t pay $3900 for it with a bad tranny.” He asks me to make an offer on the car, cuz he wants it gone. I say “I can’t make an offer without insulting you”. He says “wanna hear what I’m thinking?” I say “Sure. Can’t hurt.” He says “I can tell you are serious about the car, have good intentions, and i want the car gone. How about you give me $1000 and I’ll store the car here until you can make arrangements to get the car home.” . I couldn’t peel off $1000 and make him sign the title fast enough.

I get the car home and stick it in the garage until I can address the trans issue. Early April I pull the end case of the trans off and install a new one. After about 2 miles of driving, I hear a constant grinding noise. In gear, out of gear, clutch in, clutch out. The noise is still present. Even just cranking the engine over, I hear it.

I ended up pulling the trans and the ACT 2100 out ( clutch engaged right at the floor, plus I don’t think the 2100 will hold the first round of mods). I had Kurt Stuart of WhiteShedSpeed rebuild my old Shep trans and ordered a brand new Comp Stg 3 5048-2600 clutch and Comp flywheel.

I’m currently in the process of deleting the abs, so the new trans and clutch install will have to wait.

ABS delete is complete. What a PITA that was with the intake manifold still on. If I ever do that again to another car, I’m just yanking the motor out.

I did get the new clutch and flywheel in today, along with the trans. Competition Clutch flywheel with a Comp 5408-2600 clutch to match. Should have enough clamping force to get me into the 10’s.

Thanks Steve. Starting another car from almost scratch is somewhat frustrating, yet rewarding. I hope I can get it to the performance levels I’m shooting for with the upgrade paths I’ve chosen. I just don’t know if I’ll have the same amount of patience as I did when I was younger. Everything is definitely taking longer than I last remember.
