Hey Everyone,
Long time no see!
I havn't touched my poor 97 Talon TSi in 3 years and i finally got the cash to rebuild my head so I'm seeking some advice after I've read through a couple of the forums here.

Background Story: A few years ago my valves smacked my pistons so i had the head rebuilt (in retrospect, by a shitty shop) and bought a 1G block to build up. I had the block built with all forged internals, bored 20 over, crank was rebalanced, counterbalanced deleted. Shortly after assembly (about 200 miles), it was smoking out the exhaust.

So now my belief is that i got some bad valve seals or the head didn't get everything replaced that needed to, or i blew the head gasket or the head might be warped (it has overheated before when a coolant line ruptured on the freeway)
I want this to be the last time i pull the head off so i want it built right and to last.
This means replacing the original springs, all the seals, have the valves reseated, head resurfaced.

Below is a list of all the parts im going to order, but what i want to know is if im missing something, if one of these isn't necessary to replace, if I'm just going overkill or what.

Additional information: I have 400-450HP goals, so I'm also replacing my cheap Chinese Ebay turbo with a Big16G Evo3 Turbo.

BC Cams 268/272
BC Valve Springs and Titanium Retainers
GSC Exhaust and Intake Valves
GSC Valve Seals
OEM Valve Lock Keepers
TopLine Lifters
Ferrea Valve Guides
AEM Cam Gears
OEM Composite Head Gasket
Kiggly HLA Oil Pressure Regulator
Camshaft Seals
Valve Cover Seal Kit

Machine Shop Service:
Valve reseating
Head resurfacing
Valve guide replacement

Am i missing anything? Any mods to the head? porting?
Anyone's input is welcome.
Thanks

Everything is good the aem cam gears unless your going to adjust them not really needed i have fidanza im using just because they came with my cams, but ill be using them on my kelfords. I just got my head done with kiggly racing springs for the street , kelfords new lifters, hot tanked and decked ready to go into my new engine. The upgrade path is good to look at but you have enough stuff. Porting not needed for your setup, but if your there for it, just dont need to go crazy.

Remember the "teardrop" mod.

Thanks 1990TSIAWDTALON, I already did mod#1, forgot about mod#2. I'll do that one on my own before getting it to the machine shop

Keep the 2g head, for sure. Don’t port it, as most regular machine shops Don’t do it right, unless they are just cleaning up the casting flaws.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the porting was necessary. But i am curious, what porting IS necessary? The porting on the stock Exhaust manifold? The intake manifold?

Thanks iugrad92turbo, i still need to do some reading about the adjustable cam gears but thought I'd get them in case i wanted to adjust them later. If it isn't necessary, I could just get aftermarket ones that look good

Gasket match the exhaust manifold and the turbine housing. . Using a 2g head, I would grab an evo 3 intake manifold and have the throttle body flange ported to 60mm and use a 1g throttle body.

Excellent advice OLDDOOD, it's been a while since I been on the forums so this slipped my mind. I'll definitely look out for the IM and TB.

i found a Evo3 IM on a website called tdeviagro.com I've never heard of this site, but when i searched 4G63 it came up with hundreds of parts, all REALLY cheap. Full head gasket rebuild kits for 23$, AEM cam gears for 50$, 1000cc injectors for 99$.... WTF? anyone ever buy anything from here before?

Here is the link to the IM, currently have it in my shopping cart, hesitant to purchase

I have seen several "Evo 3" intakes but if you look close some have the EGR opening and I think they must come off of a RVR or something similar because I didn't think the EVO's had EGR valves on them, BUT......that does look like a good deal. Before I got my E3 mani, I was finding them coming from overseas for about the same price as the one you are looking at. :thumb:

You are correct. The RVR has an egr valve. The evo3 does not. Also, the RVR came with a 2g sized, 57mm, throttle body, so that should get ported out to 60mm if using a 1g TB.

This one advertised a 60mm. I ordered it. 40$!

Another oil mod?! How many are there?!

I wouldn't have thought these engines have this many problems. Has anyone indexed these?

I've been a site member for 9 years, Ive read through all of those upgrade paths before, none of them mention engine modifications or porting in the upgrade path guides.

I was hoping for a tech article that would index them like: 2G Head oil mod#1, oil mod#2, oil mod#3, etc.

Do you do the oil passage smooth on the front of the block? I do. I also radius the hole that feeds the main oil galley at the top of the outside passage. That hole also feeds the front main so you want to be sure that little feed hole doesn't get reduced, if anything, radius it also. I try to, sometimes its tricky because it's a small feed hole.
Do you flush your crank dead end rod throws also? SUPER important. You would be surprised what kind of crap comes out.
Just some things that I do. I don't usually go into detail about how I do my engines but that is most of it.
