I have a '96 GSX that I am considering trading for a 2G GST. I'm never going to build the GSX, partially because of their steadily increasing value. It's basically stock with the exception of a 3" turbo back exhaust, hard SMIC pipes and an Injen intake.

My questions would be;

- would I even notice the difference in awd vs fwd with 250-300 hp?
- what "quality" of GST would be a fair trade for an unmolested, not rusty GSX? I would love a small 16g with supporting mods
- are AWD swapped Spyders cheaper than GSX or GSTs? I would love one just for the uniqueness

I drive my GSX about 3k miles a year. I know I want something a little more built without the guilt of molesting a GSX. Mileage is around 111k. My expectation would be a driver. No "just needs a tune".

I would just put a 16g or something equivalent in your gsx and call it a day. You already know your car is good to go. And your halfway there in mods.

I partially agree. But it's going to eventually evolve to larger injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, DSM/ECM Link, wideband, boost gauge, j pipe, install kit, possible front mount intercooler, etc.

Yup. But that's the right way of doing it. And your doing it on a car u know, caus its your own. You really wana hop into someone else's car just to do the exact same thing and not know if its as healthy as yours? Plus you already have a few mods in your car to get you going. I would just keep your car and do what you want. 250-300 is nothing as far as power. And at the end its gona be your car you modded.

AWD vs FWD? Maybe.
2G GSX prices have been crazy. Clean, stock examples are far outselling modified examples. A decent stock GSX is priced the same as a nicely modified GST, with quality parts. That's the dilemma. I'm never going to make my car into a horsepower monster.

100% agree with this. I understand the not wanting to molest option, so stick to bolt on primarily. A 16G with supporting mods is far from molested in my opinion. Just be sure to use quality parts and avoid ebay junk. Just installed a small 16G on one of my GSX's over the weekend and I'm very pleased with it. At the end of the day converting the vehicle back to stock would always still be an option especially if you choose to save the original parts from the vehicle. A very tasteful route to go. (The vehicle already isn't original at this point with some modifications including the side skirts and your above mentioned. Not a bad thing, but just something to consider.)

As far as value on a GSX swapped Spyder there is really no set prices. I've seen some incomplete swaps sell for $3k to very clean representations at $12k. I would love to swap a Spyder to awd, but finding a clean enough spyder has proven difficult.

Full summary I agree with keeping your car rather than trading with someone's headache. Build it tastefully to the level that you would like it. You've got a great car right there. If you sell it one day I can almost guaranty someone else will modify it and play with it. That is the nature of these vehicles. Unless its a low mileage original showroom quality vehicle I say send it.

Performance wise it won't make much of a difference if your goal is 250-300. My gst is a spyder makes 315 ft tq to the wheels and hooks pretty good on just some all season tires. If I had some gripy tires it would be right up there. I wouldn't want a gsx because I'm sure those transfer cases are getting harder to come by if one breaks. My gst only has 35k original miles. I would sell it for just as much as any gsx. Its one of the few clean versions left. Like yours it needs nothing and everything works. Its not someone else's mess like most of these cars now a days

Does a small 16g need a FMIC? I have been looking for a super SMIC and planning on going T28 for ease of reversing to stock if needed.

I did install some polo green 2ga Talon twisties with mud flaps. I kept the original 2ga Eclipse side skirts although some have broken clips.

I know the debate is always awd vs fwd and auto vs manual. But honestly, I drive it so infrequently that I probably wouldn't notice. My car has clear coat failure also. It would be nice to have a good looking 2g with reliable bolt ons to cruise on the weekends

I just wanted to add that I appreciate everyone's input! I want the open dialogue and angles I may not be considering. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all, sometimes in text based environments it's hard to tell. I know there are super experienced individuals on here and every build is different. So thank you all I advance! Either way I am staying in the DSM community.

This is somewhat OT so apologies, but in response to the original comment about GSX's going up in value, I'm just curious, I have a '92 Talon TSi AWD manual, 78k miles, manufacture date May 1992 so it's probably 6 bolt, no mods, never been raced and all that or driven too hard, treated reasonably well but I could have done a better job of maintenance I'll admit.

I'm now in the process of fixing several issues (mostly a bad clutch and seized/rusted brakes and moderately rusted underbody but appears to be structurally sound) and restoring it as best I can (dings, scratches, dirt, crud, etc.). It's been sitting in a driveway for several years, undriven, due to the bad clutch. This also explains the seized brakes, but they needed restoration anyway.

Assuming that I can get it back to decent condition, structurally, functionally and aesthetically, which is probably going to take till spring or summer of next year, roughly, what would it go for, in terms of range, I mean totally ballpark? I'm not looking to sell it any time soon, but with all the work I'm putting into it it would be nice to know that it could pay off someday. I realize that I'd have to supply much more details and have someone look at it to get an accurate estimate, but, again, roughly.

I'm not versed in 1g's at all. I know several members on here have sub 50k mile cars. This example did sell recently. Not sure if it represents the market as a whole or is a fluke.

Running a stock smic on my small 16G and its just fine. Especially for the power levels you're looking at. You could even look at a 14b with a 7 cm housing and get similar results.

Okay, thank you. I was considering T28 because it slots between 14b and a small 16g. I don't want to hack up a bumper for a FMIC

T28 will prove to be a much simpler install as well! This was the first car I retained a stock Side mount and installed a J pipe and I have to say damn was that a tight fit!

Wow, and thanks. Mine isn't in as nice and prime condition as this one, but it's not a junker, either, and it's a LOT closer to being in this kind of condition than to being a junker. Plus all stock other than standard maintenance replacement parts. Lots of minor to moderate issues, most of which I think I can handle, the rest I can job out if I think it's worth it. Thanks again, good to know.

No worries! Hopefully someone else can chime in with some wisdom. I saw that one recently so I figured I would share the link.
