DSMer, I need help understanding a car I might buy. This Car is a 4G63T GSX and is having problems. The whole car has aftermarket parts so no OEM and has been modified by different owners..

Question: The problem is that the car won’t go over 4,500 .

A shop said it might be because it needs a new aftermarket Cam Sensor. What do you guys think?

Has anyone ever heard some shit like this?
Are there any DSM mechanics that have ever ran across the car not passing 4,500

I have been looking online on this issue and no one has a resolution of a fix, I keep reading that this looks like a mist up common issue.

Is it maybe hitting a set rev limiter? Does the car have ECMLink for tuning?

Sounds like a massive boost leak. If the car is on the stock MAF and there is unmetered air coming in somewhere it could do what you’re describing.

EDIT: Is this the same car as your profile picture? If so, then it looks to be a 420a turbo car.

No I Sold that car about a month AGO , I am thinking of buying this GSX 4G63T but I was told it has a few problems one was 4500rpm issue and its not tuned due to this problem is what I was told ..
but I am trying to get as much information on this car before I pay the asking Price

Sounds like a huge can of worms. If the shop hasn't fixed it to increase it's value, I'll suggest you price it as a basket of used parts.

I was told there's like 20g in this car and Ill be getting it for 15G but little worried about this rev and tune

If it's exactly 4500rpm, and won't rev over that in neutral, then it's probably a rev limit. Maybe the clutch switch is stuck and its trying to use launch control?

It all depends on how it acts. It could be all kinds of things.

15k for a DSM that barely runs and "just needs a tune"? I'd run away now and find a different car honestly. There are many nice examples that go up for sale that aren't even close to 15k.

No typo, 15K is what I am looking at.
If this car really is perfect for you and its chassis is super clean then you will need to decide if that is what it is worth. The car not running right can always be fixed. Not that it will be a cheap fix, but it will be possible of course. It will be extremely difficult for anyone here to diagnose this issue when you don't have real access to the car and are unsure what is in it. It could be as silly as a rev limiter like mentioned above. It could be a major engine issue I guess too. But I would carefully consider if this is the car you really want for that kind of money and consider if you are ready to spend even more to get it running right.

Yes, that sounds way overpriced. That cherry 1G that just sold on BaT went around this price, and was nearly pristine. I bought a 90 gsx that drove across the country fairly well for $4500 , and I'm now 12 grand in, and it's all stock replacements!! I can't imagine anyone would pay me that right now, unless they won the lottery with the winning ticket number being my car's VIN. (That said, I could be persuaded...). Re-engineering a car takes careful matching of components, and often very careful installation and tuning. Done in a haphazard, mod of the month way, no telling how much you'll end up peeling back the layers to find all manner of issues. The fact that it's barely drivable now makes it worth much less than the sum of it's parts, especially because you can't just refer to a factory manual and parts catalog to troubleshoot and repair. My guess on the rpm limit is ignition gremlins, but as others have pointed out, very hard to say on a modified car without more precise descriptions of what leads up to this. Is that in neutral or driving. Does it drive OK under 4500? If you can't drive it properly, no telling what else is not running right. Is the body and interior a 9 out of 10? Sometimes the mechanical stuff can be stripped down and rebuilt right, if the shell is worth it. If it has a speck of rust or interior needs love, then definitely work the price way down (half of what you're considering, tops!), or find another car. 2G still seem a little more obtainable, though I'm not really in the market, so may be wrong on that. Good 1Gs are hard to come by for sale.
Good luck!

15k? It better be spotless inside, outside and everywhere in between.

I read your reply about the Price, every time I look for a GSX Eclipse there around 10g. with minor upgrades. This one yes is 5 thousand more but I was told there 20g in upgrades ..

I am still waiting on the list of stuff that has been done to this car.

but for now, I am needing help understanding about this issue with 4500 rpm. and Tune

hopefully by the end of today, Ill have that list and you guys can help me..

Is there for sale ad somewhere that we can look at? It's not like someone is going to swoop in under you for a 15k car. Giant red flags though if these people can't get the car running well.

An upgrade is only an upgrade if it works. If you get this car for 15k and it takes another 5k to sort out all the issues you could have had a running and driving car and 10k to play with. Just a thought.

If the 20k in mods includes labor you can just subtract all that. I see lots of cars with xxxx$ "invested". Nope. Cars are mostly a losing proposition. Modded cars more so. Doesn't stop us but its a fact.

Couple of guys mention it could be launch or rev limit that has been set. Let’s say that the person selling the car is upfront and honest. Think about it, if it was just a cas and a tune, that’s about $500. Anyone that has that much money into their build would cough that up in a heartbeat. I can’t tell you the last time I saw a dsm go for $20k. Saw an EXTREMELY clean Florida 2g with mods sell for about $10k recently and that’s about the going rate for a really clean one.
