Hi, my first "real" post here so sorry if it's repetitive. I searched the forums and found a bunch of threads on this topic, which were somewhat inconclusive.

Anyway, I'm in the early stages of restoring my '92 Eagle Talon TSi AWD manual trans, and am trying to figure out what parts and liquids it needs, both specifically and in terms of brand.

Basically all of the fluids will eventually get flushed and replaced. Engine oil, coolant and brake & clutch fluid are pretty easy, so no questions there (Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30, Penzoil concentrated mixed 50/50 with distilled, Valvoline DOT 3/4). Transaxle, transfer case & rear diff oil I'll punt on for now.

But I'm somewhat confused about power steering fluid. The FSM says either ATF+, ATF 7176 or Dexron I or II, but each was superseded by superior fluids years ago. I'm leaning towards getting ATF+4, which claims to be backwards-compatible with ATF+ & ATF 7176. There are two brands to choose from.

One is MOPAR:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EKNS4SM

The other is Valvoline:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049J0F2G

Both are just over $6 so cost isn't an issue. I'm guessing that they're basically if not actually identical, but if anyone knows better, or thinks that yet a different fluid would be better, I'd appreciate any advice.

I'm leaning towards the MOPAR, simply because it's OEM.

Thanks. It's certainly confusing with all the options!

I don't think the brand of power steering fluid is really very critical under normal, basic usage were the OEM setup isn't being highly stressed. I've been running the regular old Walmart Super Tech power steering fluid for 25 years without any problems, no leaking pumps or in the system yet. This might be more important if I had over wide tires & was using wheel spacers & what not. What I would not use is any high mileage oil. These oils have special additives designed to swell the rubber in all the seals and if the seals aren't leaking they will. Once you run high mileage oil you'll have to always use it or you'll have oil leaks using non-high mileage oils.

I'll get the Mopar ATF+4, then. Thanks.

But, bad idea going with high mileage oil? I already purchased it, but haven't used it. I could return it, or use it on another car we have that definitely needs high mileage oil. I thought that cars with over 75k miles benefit from it. My Talon has just under 78k (yes, you read that right, and it's been cross-country twice). If I take care of it, replace gaskets & seals when needed, change oil & other fluids, filters, etc., regularly, and so on, I might never need high mileage oil? Is there ever a situation in which it makes sense for a car like this? And even if using it damages the seals, can't I just replace them?
