Over the past couple years I have had some 2gs come and go, between bad luck with engine builds, rusted out floor pans or rotted out rockers and strut towers each of them has either needed to be parted out or the chassis just wasn't where I wanted it to be to build on. Either way I came across a deal an hour and a half from my house I just couldn't pass up, and after a day or two of back and forth and what felt like an eternity the car showed up in front of my house. So lets break it down...

Pros:
-Runs and drives
-Rust free shell
-Allegedly had a JDM 4G63 installed a couple years back along with a bunch of maintenance like brakes, timing components etc. Receipts were all provided and work was done by a Mazda dealership. Honestly not sure if this is a pro or con yet.
-Cheap

Cons:
-Leaking coolant
-Body needs lots of love
-Dirty as hell
-Still probably needs a decent amount of maintenance love
-Automatic
-Ugly

So here she is and here's to the start of a what I hope to be long term build. All please welcome what my coworker dubbed as the "Yellow Banana"!

I have a banana every morning but depending on when I bought them, they’re not always yellow. ROFL Being dirty doesn’t bother me as long as the potential is there. Dirty cleans up...rust is a little harder. I’m curious what you paid for it :hmm:

@TK's9d2TSi I have an update coming in the next few days, Ive already bought a few things so Ill do a run down of costs and progress then. And yeah dirty doesn't bother me much either, and YES rust is definitely harder to deal with.

April 25th - May 1st

First stop was to tear the car down as there was multiple things to address that would be easier to deal with with the car being stripped. The interior was totally sun faded and in some places ripped/cracked and in major need or either cleaning or replacement. So I got to work.

If you look closely you can see the carpet was all jacked up so I pulled it and cleaned it up to only find out that it was for a 1g not a 2g.

Not horrible but not great. The car had definitely been neglected for many years.

Spare area had what looked to be a nest of some kind :shrug again not my first time dealing with that. Looks like Ill be double checking all the wiring to ensure no chew throughs.

Notice the huge crack in the dash and peeling airbag (common issue) among other things

There was some rust starting in the spare tire area that I wanted to address. It wasn't bad but I wanted to take care of it before it went any further. Wire wheel, and hour or so of cleaning and prep, rust reformer and then rubber undercoating on top and it should be good to go.

Next update very soon...

May 1st (evening)

Small update...

Found a guy with a few DSMs he was parting out about an hour away so I made the drive to strip a fairly clean gray cloth interior Talon. I know its not black but that will come much later down the line as I just need a decently clean interior for now. 200$ later and I had a full interior including dash and carpet, front fender and a few others things I needed (hood prop, clips, bolts etc).

Ha @jinscho I am honestly not exactly sure which radiator it was but I assumed it was out of a 1g since the carpet was as well :shrug but Ill go with that answer LOL...good eyes! It had a major leak so its already been replaced (next update).

The 1G rad has different lower mounting points. The 2G Spyder GS rad shares the same mounting points, but has the top hose inlet on the passenger side. I honestly wish the Spyder GS rads had better aftermarket support, I wanted to keep that setup, but the thicker core and better under-hood looks of an aluminum radiator won that argument :idontknow:

May 9th

So I am super far behind on my updates. Last update I had picked up a new interior for the car and still needed to repair the hole in the radiator. After a few weeks of waiting for some parts to come in I finally swapped the radiator and got most of the interior swapped over. After that I wanted to remove the stock auto oil cooler as the previous owners hacked it back together and I had an extra B&M oil cooler laying around. After a bit of mock up and a couple working at it I had the brackets welded up and the cooler mounted. In later updates you will see how this was just a big waste of my time but I digress.

I did mention in a previous post that I would list how much I bought the car for, the guy was originally asking 4200$ for the car which was just ludicrous so after talking to the guy I found out he was leaving the country and was selling all of his possessions. Hop skip and a jump later I bought the car for 400$ plus 200$ to tow it an hour back to my house. Car clearly has issues but is mostly rust free and a solid foundation for a build. Got lots of work to do...

Ive always wanted to wrinkle coat a valve cover so figured Id try my hand at doing it while performing a tune up on the car. Some imperfections for sure but I think it overall turned out good. I may strip it in the future and actually use wrinkle powder coat to do it instead of the spray can but I am happy overall. I also wanted to do a compression test to see if the engine was healthy or not, over all across the board I got 170s and 175s, I don't think anyone can complain about those numbers.

Things done in this update:
Wrinkle coat valve cover black
Added NGK plugs and wires
Compression tested engine
And final clean up of the interior and outside (for now)

End of May

Things were fairly good, I got the car into my possession, did a few of the maintenance updates and got the car repaired enough that I could get the car licensed and titled in my name. But when buying the car the previous owner mentioned that the automatic did slip on occasion and after driving it around a bit to see if there were any other kinks I needed to iron out the slipping trans just had to go. I had a good condition automatic I had pulled out of a 96 GST Spyder the year before BUT I really wanted to convert it over to a 5 speed. The forums said it was "easy" and I wanted to know what it would take to convert it for myself so I could know for future purchases (don't tell my wife...she things this is the last one hehe). So after being told from work that we would be WFH for the foreseeable future and finding the parts I needed for the swap close to my house I pulled the trigger. Mind you this car will NOT be a drag car nor will I heavily race this car at all, this car is being built for me and more tailored towards back road driving/cruising/personal enjoyable driving experience. So the tear down began...

Disclaimer, I have slacked when taking pictures and don't have much to show here. Ill try and be better with taking the time to document what I am doing :( As some of you may know these cars can be a complete b*$tch to work on so in those moments I just trucked along.

First started with tearing down the whole front end

Its important to note here that I planned to just pull the transmission but ended up pulling the whole thing. I honestly think pulling it as a whole is much easier but that's just me. I am swapping transmissions with a guy in Illinois since he drag races an automatic 2g and needed the two automatics I had for parts. He is providing all the parts necessary for the swap and even threw in a 2gb front bumper and headlights cause mine where cracked/in bad shape. I also plan to clean up the block a bit and do a full timing belt job while its out.

Also during this whole process I will be replacing all the control arms, end links, tie rods, shocks, springs, a few bushings and a few other misc things. I had all of these parts laying around NEW from a previous build I was going to do so figured why not do the upgrade while I am here. Next update will cover that process along with the swap progress but this is where I am for now. I seriously need more pictures :)

Thanks for checking out my build thread!
Gregory

Gotta love those twisty sides! Nice find and at a REALLY good price! Also, your car really is a banana, yellow on the outside, and white on the inside!

The car was sold a year or so ago :(

"Stepped" away from DSMs...since that time I have slightly come back. I may make a build journal that just covers all the DSMs I buy instead of a thread per car. Life thread?
