Hello and thanks for having me. I am a new member but been reading threads here and there for the past year or so.
I'm not a newbie to modded cars but I am new to this platform. That being said I am having a hard time figuring out the best solution/route to take for replacing the broken stock trans in my 1990 Galant gsx.
It is vr4 engine swapped and modded to the point of making 501 to the wheels with an fp red, running on e85 and methanol injection. It currently sits with the stock gsx trans that is broken. I figure fixing it is pointless and I need a stronger turbo trans and other related parts to do the swap.

What all do I need and where do I get it because I've been having a hell of a time finding anything for this car and it's frustrating. I wanna get back to being able to shock people on the weekends with this beast, thanks guys

You can try Jacks Transmissions who is one of the supporting members here. They have a moulded shipping box you can purchase, put your trans in it and ship it out to them for a rebuild and you can select upgrade options as well. That said, I contacted them about a year or two ago and they were somewhat reluctant to take a look at my trans stating that OEM parts where getting hard to come by so I don't know how much DSM stuff they are doing these days ... but they have a good reputation and do quality work.

I've heard of the Galant GSX's, but I'm not familiar with them. Do they share the same W5M33 AWD transmission? ... I would assume they do.

Yeah they said they're not even really doing it anymore and that even rebuilt kits are missing gears and what not. They are also charging more than I'm willing to spend on this but they do quality work indeed.

As far as your question of sharing the same trans, that I'm not sure. I believe it's just a weak 5 speed, non turbo trans.

At this point with the difficulty of procuring parts I'm willing to do a 1g or even 2g turbo trans swap, this sucks :(

Do you have the trans out? There should be a code stamped on it somewhere that'll tell you what you have. There's a few guys on here with Galant GSX's someone should know. Like I said, other than knowing they exist, I'm not very familiar with them.

Super cool car though, man. Definitely get it up and running. I'm assuming since you in AZ it's probably pretty rust free.

If memory serves it's a w5m31. Find a w5m33. I don't have direct knowledge if axles, trans plate etc work. You will need a stepped awd flywheel and clutch if it doesn't already have that.

I don't. No worries, yeah neither am I LOL.
And thanks, yeah I'm trying but this has become a complicated and expensive problem to fix for a toy I rarely drove
And yeah, rust free 100%

I'll search for that one, thanks. Ugh this is annoying, seems there's no simple easy way of going about this.

Is a 2g turbo trans stronger than a 1g turbo trans?

1G and 2G AWD drive trans are essentially the same. There are differences in the motor mounts and the shifter linkages (I think - If I remember right).

Ok cool, so doesn't really matter which one I go with then, I'm assuming the 1g is just an easier swap without needing to drill starter plate and bend shift arms like on the 2g?

Someone quoted me 1750 for a 1g turbo trans, transfer case, and driveshaft. This seems outrageous to me...does that seem about right or what should I expect to pay? I'm seeing entire 1g cars for like 3k so seems stupid to pay that just for trans and related parts
