Hey all, I just wanted to share some news on a project we are working on. The hard top from the C1 Motorsports Eclipse, that was built by Andrew Brilliant back in the day, is being molded by Sergio at Carbonetics to be made available for purchase soon to the general public!

The C1 Hard Top will be the first and only hard top available for the 2G Eclipse Spyder, so if you or someone you know with a Spyder has dreamed of that hard top life, consider this an official announcement.

The plan is to make it a bolt in replacement, but there will be a fair amount of work required on our end as the original was all custom made. Details like that will be made available later as they are solidified.

It is also planned to clean up the top some more, smooth out uneven areas, and make it way lighter. It will be available in both carbon and fiberglass! A rear lexan or glass piece could easily be sourced, as well as rear quarter windows. For our race car, it wasn't important, but the option for DD use will be of course retained with the new top.

We have already got the top packed up and on its way to Carbonetics. We are posting the day by day updates on our social media (view my signature) for those who like their news live, but any of the old timers who just want to know the big details/milestones, I'll post back here as it comes along.

This isn't a "for sale" post, so those please keep those inquiries to our other platforms and keep this thread clean and open. What we'd love to see though is if anyone has interest in the C1 Hard Top and if anyone has suggestions for the product development while it has this opportunity to be done better.

I'll be the first to admit I'm all go and no show, so if it doesn't make the car faster, we don't have it. We sometimes forget the creature comforts. Something like a rear glass defogger/defroster is something I have zero experience designing. Ideas and suggestions like that would be great to discuss.

Thanks!

The C1 Hardtop has crossed the border and is now in the hands of Sergio at Carbonetics. Before work can begin, he had to see how it looked on his car straight away.

i am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter my good man! Looking forward to updates...
Not to be a dick. I really don't mean to. But what ideas? This is something Andrew Brilliant created out of thin air based on years of learning and testing. What you're looking at is something bought and copied for profit.

@Atuca, is AB cool with this?

Nope, we are just actively publicly sharing this project on social media and forums and hoping he never see's that he's tagged in every post. In fact, we actually just bought it to copy everything for profit.

JIG'S UP BOYS!

And we're expected to know this through only the information posted in this thread? The guy posted that he was intrigued by your ideas, when the only idea shared here was to send it to carbonetics. You can't expect us to know what isn't posted in this thread, which is why I simply asked. Stay mad I guess. Sheesh.

I'd be surprised if Andrew cared at this point, he sold the car and didn't want to look back. Sergio bought the hardtop and is doing something the 2g Spyder community has wanted for years and years.

By the way the whole "intrigued by your ideas..." thing is an old old meme I used. Kinda dating myself. Just meant i was intrigues to see someone attempting a hard top. Didn't mean to start a war....

I knew what you meant, and I appreciate it. There were no options for hard tops, and originally started this project for just me to get weight down as the original was super heavy. Later (after the tranny failure in November, see my build profile), we decided since C1 is changing chassis for new drive train anyway, I started looking at options for getting the hard top mass produced off the Spyder. Andrew didn't want to get into the body panel market; he sells designs of race cars. That is why he has Sergio making the v2 aero kit, and is the same reason I am having Sergio do this top. DSMers have been wanting an option forever, and half the work was already done pulling this one off the car. Carbonetics will be cleaning up the top, mostly filling unnecessary holes, and setting it up to utilize the stock mounts hopefully. Then make a mold of that. That will require a lot of work with a new inner skeleton, which is something the original had none of.

Here is a photo not many have seen. The original construction of the hard top, and still present in the top today, was this: they used a NOS billboard as the core material. Then layered on a ton of resin. Carbonetics will be doing a much better job than that.

If anyone else needs some justification of our work as more than just
bought and copied for profit
, check out the C1 build linked in my signature on DSMtuners or social media. Andrew is still providing guidance, but we are taking the car to a level Andrew previously only dreamed about. He doesn't care about the day to day aspects of the build anymore, that is what I am taking care of now. The C1 hard top is just one of many projects we're working on, and anyone is welcome to share it too. The hype just helps Sergio to invest himself in the project more as well. He just finished wrapping up a Galant VR4 Carbon project: doors, trunk, front, everything. The guy and his team work super hard. Now that's finished he's catching up on some back log orders and will be starting this soon.

All good man, what you're doing is pretty rad and I apologize for how I came off.

I'm interested to learn more - are you designing this to be relatively easy to remove/reinstall for those who want to drive with the top off in summer but put a top back on for rainy days or in winter?

This is the tricky bit and the main reason it got sent off to Sergio versus me just making it in the C1 garage. I could have made a mold out of the outer shell and called it done and it would have worked for my Spyder, but to mount on a stock bodied car with the OEM mounts, a skeleton needs to be fabricated on the underside of that shell. I don't have stock Spyder mounts to build off of like Sergio does with his shell, so that is the big under taking atm. I haven't followed up with him in a while, but last I heard, the goal was to have the hard top available before the end of the year.

I definitely look forward to seeing the end product and it will for sure be on my list of the many more things to buy from sergio.

Got some exciting news on the #C1HardTop

In the next few weeks, we will be opening group buy deposits for the C1 Motorsports 2G Spyder hard top that will be built by Carbonetics. Details on the deposit amount, project completion date goal, and final total cost will also be coming soon. This is the next step folks, if you want a top, Sergio has one request.

While we'll cross post to Instagram and various forums, please go to our Facebook page and comment a photo of your Spyder on the hard top post there as it is the platform of choice for Sergio. We want to get an idea of how many tops we need to produce. Each Spyder photo comment = 1 more hard top we'll produce. He wants an up to date count of folks who are actually interested in purchasing one.

If you want a C1 Hard Top for your second generation 1995-1999 #convertible #Mitsubishi #Eclipse #Spyder, now is the time to make it known. Tell your friends. Share the news.

Let's go!
