Facebook has taken over the forums in terms of the quick and easy need for the information NOW! The problem with that is everyone has an opinion. A filtered picture, single statement and some kid will follow that advice. People now think a big horsepower car is streetable for the average person but can’t drive or maintain a bolton car well. Improper maintenance and poor install is a killer too. See how fast any engine goes pop if a single wire or a connection comes loose at the limit.

Yup. It's sad to watch. Luckily we haven't been hit as hard by FB as other platforms have (not that we've been immune, obviously), we're still getting 4-5k posts in the forum every month, and surprising traffic numbers. I've seen other forums wiped out completely. While some automotive platforms still have forums that are thriving. It doesn't all have to do with FB, but again though, things change. And things that probably should be important to the newer crowd just aren't sometimes, even when it could serve them well. Hopefully the Shootout does well going forward, and hopefully any other DSM event that might get organized does well too. Those events serve the community well, and are important.

What you say might hold true for a lot of people in the DSM world, but things always have a way of changing over time, and sentiment can change too. The new wave of DSMers who come into the community won't necessarily have the same connection with the event as the past community members did, and the future of the event will rest largely in the hands of the new DSM owners going forward.

To give you a different example - I've always felt that this forum represented some of the best aspects of the DSM community. We have had most of the well known people in the DSM world post here over the past 19 years, helping others out and sharing what they're working on. We've built up a huge database of useful information and still have a great community to this day that participates regularly. There have been other DSM forums out there over the years but they're all pretty much dead and/or gone now. And a large contingent of the DSM community holds this site in high regard, much the way some do the Shootout. Yet, the new wave of DSMers don't always participate in forums like this like the majority did in the past. Some don't even know how to post a thread. Things change. What you and I feel is important, what we feel should be preserved and developed, isn't always important to the next generation. C'est la vie.

I'm happy to see the Shootout living on, even if it's different now. But I also hope to see a new DSM/4G63-only event put on that might give the community another opportunity to celebrate the platform. I think that would be cool.

I feel inspired to add my little piece here.
I would consider myself probably part of a new wave of DSMer as I bought my dsm in 2017 and am a younger person.
This sitw has been invaluable to me in learning to work on the car and what inspired me to get one over any other "tuner" car. In my limited experience there isn't anything else like it out there. The fact that I can find as much information about a platform that began in 1990 and ended production in 1999 is truly impressive. Before getting my dsm I had 0 experience working on cars and although I still have only a small amount of experience I owe it almost entirely to this site and Jafeomobile's YouTube videos.
I have gotten help on from this sites members that I would have not gotten anywhere else and have learned a lot from this site and it's members. The fact that it is here is invaluable to a newcomer like myself and I consider myself very lucky to have it and be a part of it. I think it is truly impressive that someone my age can start a journey with my car and have the support from a site like this.
I don't know that I would ever drive my dsm from the Pacific Northwest to the shootout given the distance but an exclusive dsm event is something I would like to go to at some point in my life. Hopefully the scene will live on one way or another.

That's encouraging to read. Thanks for sharing.

And I'm with you - I had always wanted to take a DSM to the Shootout, but it's really tough when you're on the west coast. My only trip out there was on a plane, and I'm glad I was able to make that trip. Hope you get to make your way to one soon.
