Not sure if I'm posting to the right thread but I just got a 98 gsx with a bunch of work done to it my friend that gave me the car told me I need to get a haltec 1000 but that's a 1500 dollar ecu. But someone else told me I can solder something called a uart on my ecu that will allow me to tune the car but I need to find the RX tx and ground I have a non eprom ecu so my question is does anybody know where the RX tx and ground pins would be on the ecu

I would highly recommend taking a look into DSM Link is the most common form of tuning for our vehicles http://www.ecmtuning.com/ They do offer socket service for non eprom ecus. They cannot socket 98-99 Ecus however.

I do believe they are currently out of stock on 2G chips, but unless you are extremely skilled at soldering and circuit board work I would recommend them to do the whole job.

Umm.. does the 98 have the stock ECU still? Because if so, it's a flashable black box. You'll need a tactrix openport 2.0 cable and reflash adapter (can be had for less than $200 brand new), a copy of EvoScan for logging purposes ($30), ECUFlash ($Free.99), and CeddyMods which is also very inexpensive ($30 I believe for the FULL version with SD and Big Maps).

Figure out what ECU is in the car currently, then make a plan from there.

That someone doesn't know much about DSM ECU's. Most of them predate the availability of any reprogramming on the fly, the exception being the 98/99 black plastic version which is reflashable along the lines that jinscho mentioned. DSMLink modifies the factory EPROM ECU's to support modifying the various parameters and tables needed to tune your car..

BTW, UART = Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter. A serial port. 1G's have one as part of the OBD1 diagnostic port and 2G's have one as part of the OBD 2 port.
