I have a 95 transmission in my car but have a 98 transmission sitting in my garage that a friend of mine gave me. It has double syncros, welded diff, etc. in it but I know you can't use a 98 transmission with a 95 transfer case because of the gear ratio differences. So I'm just wondering which parts are different exactly? My transmission is leaking and figured if I just took out the parts from the 98 that won't work, that'd be awesome. I also have 2 stripped bolt holes where the transfer case bolts up on my 95 so only have 3 bolts holding on the transfer case so wanting to use the 98 housing with the upgraded internals, and take my 4 spider diff out of my 95 and swap over to the 98 as well if that will work. Anyone able to help with some knowledge in this area? Thanks!

Here is some information worth reading:

Thanks Paul! I can give the info but you definately have the hands on experience to give him solid advice. I can always rely on your posts!

If you didn't quite get that change the front diff ring and pinion. I run a 96 trans in my 97 with a 97 transfer case.

Thanks! I'll just have to tear it apart and figure out exactly which parts those are. Lol. I've torn them apart plenty of times but it's been awhile now, thank the Lord!!!

The front diff ring gear is the difference, the pinion gear is identical, that is, if no one else has swapped them earlier in its life. Either way, it is easy to identify.

Ring gear has 58 teeth in 95-96, 57 teeth in 97-99.

Transfer case differences is 1.090 ratio 24/22 tooth gearset for 1990-1996, and 1.074 ratio 29/27 tooth gearset in 1997-1999.

Finally getting to this. Assuming these are the parts I need to swap out?

Correct. Count your ring gear teeth. The pinion should be identical in your circumstance, but check the tooth thickness and profile against the other one. You can also spin test the pinion vs. the front diff ring gear by hand and you will hear a noticeable chatter if you have the wrong profile installed.

Has anyone actually driven on mismatched tranny/tcase? I am getting some strange notices and I am wondering if accidentally mixed them up?

I am using a VC, a spool or VCE would probably make wheels bind-up.
Leon, yes, I have done it on my car, and it is quite noticeable even with a 4 spider center diff. On the dyno at 60mph it was about a 4 mph difference front to rear speed, so it is significant.

You would get binding just pushing the car, and it is really squirrelly to drive. A lot of load, easy way to overheat stuff, blow head gasket. nuke a turbo, etc. Felt even worse for loading than a cam angle sensor 180° out (97-99 CAS with sensor flipped 180°).

You would have similar feelings running taller tires front or rear. I haven't driven one like this but I can imagine what it would do.

Years ago ibhad a sound I couldn't find. Didn't change pitch with gear change. Wasn't a wheel bearing tienedniutbto be the dust shield on the tcase was loose
