I'm recovering my headliner and I'm trying to figure out which adhesive to use. Based on the Tech articles it looks like I'm looking at either Super 77 or 3M 08088...

I am going to be using felt instead of foam backed headliner material and I am wondering which I should use?

According to Locke "3M 08088 contains methyl acetate. This is not for use on polystyrene foam backing panels, such as we have.

See MSDS: http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawe..._LXT1u666666-- " but since I am using Felt instead of headliner material would I be ok?

and as for Super 77, I am having a hard time finding an accurate temperature range so that when its 100 degrees outside, and its 150 in my car, It doesn't become soft and release the fabric. ( Similar to the dripping tar from our doors I'm sure 2G owners are ALL to familiar with). I have read on other forums that Super 77 is not resistant enough, but there is a tech article on here saying 3M 74 or higher is fine...

So what are some thoughts from people who live in warmer climates? What did you use? (I only really want to hear if you have experience, not speculation).

**I bought a can of Super 77, but I can always return it if people think it won't work**

Thanks

I used 3m it works well no problems in five years spray it both parts liner and the cardboard, thats all i did, holds up nicely.

I used the 3m stuff, also i used other brands over the years, but i have 3m on the car now really good stuff.

I used 08088 on mine as well and had no problems with it. Very nice stuff...

I used a sweatshirt material similar to felt and it did not hold. Was fine during the cooler climates but soon as it got warm, it ended up sagging. This was using the 3m heavy duty spray, just didn't hold the fabric. I've since then switch to suede and its great.

When we re-did my buddy's headliner, the factory cloth pulled off and left the foam backing behind. So we just got some material and headliner spray glue and went to town.

You guys used the 3M General Trim Adhesive? (08088)

You gotta get the good stuff...

Used this stuff when I redid my headliner, holding up for about a year now without one single problem :thumb:

I used two 3m products..I think they were just called contact cement..Never had a problem and it's been 4 years no sagging..
The spray stuff was easier to apply..The stuff out of the can you had to brush on but worked just as well..

I used the headliner adhesive in the orange can from Advance Auto Parts (sprayed board and material) with felt from a fabric store over a year ago and it's held up great. I live in Orlando, Florida and it's the dead of Summer right now. That should say something :)

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like I might take that Super 77 back and get something a little stronger. I don't want to put all of this time in and then have it fall apart again.

I recovered the headliner in my old 2G GSX with suede and used the 3M stuff from Walmart. I had zero issues of it holding.

Been doing this stuff since I was 16 years old . I am now 68 . Bud92gsx .. you are right . Contact Cement is the best way to go . Get your self a cheap ( maybe $30 ) spray gun at your local upholstery and a can of contact cement . Your air should be set to about 125 psi .. It`s a good investment and can come in handy for much more .. Fill it with 303 fabric guard and reseal your convertible top . Fill it with oil guard and do your own undercarriage .
