Recently bought a 96 gst and was told it was rebuilt I have serious doubts but went with it anyways because I wanted a project. Said all it needs is timing and a battery, just wanting to know if I should do the timing and see if he was being honest or if I should look into the motor first and check for bent valves and rods and such

Pop the VC off and look at the valve springs and see if any valves are not closing.

I say if the timing hasn't been done, and you don't mind the extra work, open the engine up and see what's inside. I've gotten accustomed to many people not being honest about what they're selling. At least you'll have peace of mind one way or another. I personally wouldn't risk timing it and hoping for the best without looking.

Definitely inspect the timing belt and timing marks. I'd buy a new valve cover gasket (20$ ebay) and pop the VC off like recommend above and inspect the valve train.

I'm guessing the motor is in the car? Are you familiar with DSM's?

I'm not gonna trust someone else's work on a dsm for the most part. I'd jack up the car, pull the motor mounts, drop the motor and crawl around it all. You'll probably find leaks if it isnt a well maintained car.

i just rebuilt my 420a. i have found timing to be a real nightmare. you have to be very precise.
