I recently rebuilt the cylinder head and replaced cylinder 2 from previous damage. Once the car started the first time after everything was bolted on there was a loud ticking noise. I assumed it was the lifters so I took off the valve cover and everything seemed fine. The noise was most likely from the head not having enough oil for the lifters yet. But I hand cranked and it would turn but would stop when it got to cylinder 2 and 3, unless I cranked it fast it wouldn't turn completely. So I took of the rockers arm with timing on and cranked it again and it still would crank but stop when it got to cylinder 2 and 3 before doing a complete turn. Anyone have an idea on what it might be?

When you rebuilt your head, did you install new lifters, or did you clean out your lifters, and then forgot to oil purge them prior to installation? Are you 100% positive about the timing belt placement?

Our 4G63/4 engines are interference engines, which means the valves can hit the tops of the pistons if they don't synchronize their movements. If the position of the cam gears was off, there is a chance that the valves hit the tops of the pistons. You should check this out by removing the spark plug and inserting a borescope into each cylinder, looking for damage to the tops of pistons.

There are several great articles here, on 'Tuners, that will walk you through proper timing belt alignment and installation.

I installed evo 8 lifters and I did not bleed at first. Timing was checked and it looks good. I took the rockers arms off to bleed the lifters but even without rocker arms on it will turn but will stop when its cranked on cylinder 2 and 3 when i crank it slowly but when you crank it fast I am able to crank it all the way . I just replaced cylinder 2 as well.

What do you mean, replaced cylinder two? Do you mean replaced the piston and rings? Was it honed? What was the previous damage on that cylinder?
You can always pull the spark plug and look down the cylinder to see if there is any damage on the piston tops. It sounds like you have something hitting the piston. What is the block's current bore, and when you put the head gasket on did you ensure that the gasket did not encroach into the combustion chamber?

Just because you only changed things for cylinder #2, doesn't mean that this is the cylinder that is hanging up, or having contact. You'll have to check them all. You may only get your answer after you pull the head again.

Thats what's going to happen. Its a pain in the ass but must be done. Thanks.

Cylinder number 2 was damaged from the valves breaking and was replaced by another piston. The block's bore is standard and yes when the head gasket was put on it did not encroach into the combustion chamber. I attached the photos of the damage and then then the rebuild.

So the cams don't spin freely without rocker arms? Then could be the cams are bent or/and the cam caps and journals are not aligned.

Are you turning this over by hand when you say cranked, or are you actually bumping the starter?

And without rockers in, it does sound like that cams might be part of the issue, or even hearing clearances on the crank journal you replaced the piston on. Did you check clearance on that journal in multiple areas?

Correct I am able to spin them freely until it stop on cylinder 2 and 3. I dont think the cams are bent as they are new and the cam caps and journals are aligned.

Yes turning by hand. I did not check clearance on the journal. I believe that might be the problem.

Leakdown test in order?

My 2 cents worth would be to take the belt off and verify the bottom end is not the problem first.
