I had just bought this DSM, 79,000 miles, test drove it, ran fine. When I got it home, I took it out for a spin and started losing power and started making the noise you see in the video. I have all the basic belts off to eliminate those items, and it still makes the horrible sound.Timing gears look good at TDC and compression test on all cylinders are in range. Everything looks correct under the valve cover. Can anyone help me pinpoint what this noise might be? Also, no codes. 98 GST

Sounds like lifters. According to the video, it seems that you are not getting enough oil pressure in exhaust side for some reason. Does your oil light come on? Maybe should check oil to see any bad sign from bearings.
BTW, be careful with the towel on the cylinder head. Don't let it be caught in cams or cam gears. That makes me really worried..

Thank you for the reply. No oil light. I have immersed the lifters in oil and stabilizer, and then started up real quick to see any noticable change. I just wish i knew whether this motor is junk or not so i can move forward without wasting more time........LOL. Bearing caps near gears looked good.

Not the lifters themselves. I meant the cylinder head may not be getting enough oil pressure. (Check the pic below. Where the green circle doesn't look having oil pressure. and I don't see oil coming from rocker arms). And as for the bearings, I meant as rod/main bearings. Can you see if all rocker arms are shooting oil to cam lobes?

DSMPT........I think your onto something. I only have 2 rockerarms shooting fluid and only 1 port shooting straight in the air. Its above the circle you drew. I was not aware that every rocker was supposed to shoot fluid. What would your next move be?

I never really drove it like this but I have had many start ups trying to figure out what it could be. Should I check for piston and bearing slack the old fashioned way? Right when piston starts the downstroke, stick a screwdriver against each piston and check for movement?

Did you do a compression test, right? If only few rocker arms are not shooting oil, possibly just the hole is clogged but in this case I guess for some reason the head is not getting enough oil, the engine has oiling issue. if possible, check the real oil pressure at the oil filter housing and at the head. I don't trust the stock oil gauge.
And if I were you I would drain the oil to see if the oil contain metal flakes from the rod/main bearings. If you see some metal flakes, unfortunately it's probably time to rebuild.

You have been a great help. Im going to bother you with just 2 more questions. How would I check pressure at the head and the oil filter housing? Give me a general idea and I will continue to look at more threads here and youtube, etc to get me started. And last thing, any recommendations on where to get a new or rebuilt longblock?

You can put a pressure gauge to where the oil pressure sender on the oil filter housing and on the front side of the head. See the pic below. The head is more complicated but at least you can see if the pressure reaches to the head or not. Common gauges come with NPT but the ports are taper 1/8 BSPT. So the best way is you use a gauge with 1/8 BSPT or an adapter but if you can't find them you can use a 1/8 NPT pressure gauge, but it's not going in much. so just not over tighten to avoid to damage the thread part.
As for the rebuild, if you don't do it by yourself, ask someone who live in your area, or make a thread about that. I think many people would chime in and would give you some recommendations.
Or if you don't mind to ship the engine, there are many great engine builders/good shops. You can even find in this forum.

My first guess would be timing might have skipped. I'd check timing on all the sprockets and make sure they're correct. It sounds like it wants to cut off so maybe another thing could be not all pistons are firing. I'd pull each spark plug wire off one at a time and see if it gets worse or stays the same. That will tell you if that's the case that the firing is off or the coil pack/wire/sparkplug is bad. Hope that's helpful.
