Hey guys! I saw a video of a machine that can remove rust and paint down to pure bare metal ready for primer and paint in minutes, they are VERY expensive... DSM cars seem to either get crashed by kids or rust to death with time and fill up the scrapyard for parts, not showing their beauty on the road. I was wondering if we can all get together and pitch in with the DSM Vendors on the site and buy 2 laser rust removal machines 1 for the east coast and 1 for the west coast or midwest if rust isn't too bad in the west. Everyone could discuss what reputable body shops the machines would be held at and have the shop contribute $$$ too, since they would make a lot of money afterwards on it doing service. We would make a Go Fund Me or something similar and set goals for more powerful machines. I believe $100,000 machines would be strong enough for a shop. First use preference (for free the first time, and a discounted price later for DSM members at the shop) would be based on $/$$/$$$ contribution for each coast whichever you are closer too. #SAVETHEECLIPSE and other DSMs. https://www.google.com/search?q=las...hWqnOAKHR80Bn0Q_AUoA3oECBIQAw&biw=412&bih=770

I like your optimism but probably won’t happen. Don’t think it removes paint though unless it’s something new.
It is a process called sublimation, and from what I read it removes everything down to perfectly clean metal. :hmm:

This could also raise the value of DSMs because they could be factory quality again, and a mint collectors car in the future.

What do you mean "what", this could help us maintain our cars permanently, and not see them disappear, I barely ever see an Eclipse 2G let alone a GSX in my area! These are one of the most beautiful cars ever made and ahead of their time in looks. Mitsubishi only seems interested in making family vehicles now, they have abandoned the community.

Your idea of crowdfunding shop equipment for a shop you have no stake in is hilariously naive to me. I was hoping to sit back and laugh at the responses, but you forced my hand.

On a completely unrelated note... I am starting a go-fund-me for a dyno in my garage. If anyone wants to contribute a few thousand, let me know.... Ill give you your first 3 pulls for free...

Well, there could be people on the forum who have shops and would be interested. You would just have them sign a leagally binding contract of the service, pricing, and discounts that would be offered and for the equipment ownership. No need to be so pessimistic, nothing of worth comes from it. I am just starting a general discussion and seeing if there is interest and possible ways of getting it done, if you have something that would work better or could be improved please post your thoughts.

Something that will work better is the stuff that everyone does. Media blasting, wire wheel etc. That is 1/10000 of the cost and does the exact same thing.

So media blasting removes all rust to the metal? Would the metal be ready for primer afterwards?

A lot of people here don't have issues with rust and these machines are so expensive, we all drive DSM here not super cars. I think at the amount of people willing to invest into something like this that wouldn't even be at their shop or a free service is going to be very few. Even 10 people going in for the cheapest machine is still $5,000 each. I would much rather put a few thousand into my own car or pay a little less then that and do my own work removing rust.

I didn't have any noticeable distortion issues when I blasted the entire underbody of my silver car, :idontknow:. Hazardous - Yes. Time consuming - Yes. Expensive - if you are paying someone to do it for you, yes. I remember thinking it was incredibly cheap doing it myself, and I didn't even bother re-using media. 12-16 50lb bags at $6-7 /bag ~$100.

All of this is off topic. I am not interested in contributing to anyone's shop equipment but my own. If I wanted this equipment used in a restoration I was doing, I would look for a shop that already owns that equipment.

Best of luck! :hellyeah:

You could also probably just rent a stand alone vapor blaster for cheaper.

Unfortunately most people still building DSMs don't have that type of money to throw around. I agree its way easier and cheaper to just do the work yourself, or even pay someone to do it. Most people with that type of money moved on to Evos and GTRs etc.

The enthusiasm is appreciated, but some things are just a little unrealistic. Even if there were 2 machines in the US, I'm not going to trailer my car across states for a "free service." The shop would still need to pay labor and overhead everytime its used.

have you ever done these? they warp sh**, they are expensive, they are time consuming, tehy are hazardous.

Going to just disagree with everything you said. Yes I have soda blasted my entire front clip. Could soda blast sheet metal all day and it wouldn't warp it, and it sure as hell was not expensive, nor excessively time consuming. Almost every hot rod shop uses media blasting when doing a full resto.

Soda blasting doesn't do shit for rust removal. We are talking about rust removal, not paint removal. Yes I know many shops use media blasting - I worked in those shops. It warps the f*** out of shit. Take some old muscle car sheetmetal and strip it with 80 on a da, and tell me that doesn't warp it. take a 12" square of rusty 19ga steel and blast it clean. Now you can eat your cheerios out of it. Not expensive? Wrong. Run a 5hp compressor ($1000) that never shuts off. It's $1/hr to do that. Then put $7/50lbs sand in the blaster, and you use about 100lbs/hr Then you need an air supplied hood ($1000) You can have all day in blasting the underside of a car. $200/day

But where does it go?

Man as much as I would LOVE to have access to one of these right now, like other people have stated.... we are talking about dsm owners LOL. I would rather keep spending $3.99ish for new wire wheels once I throw all the wires/wear mine down than drop the money you are talking about for that machine. But you are right.. it does suck seeing the cars fall by the waist side every year that goes by.

Yeah, I guess I am going to look around in my area for a machine shop or car place that might have one, if not, I will look into surface blasting.
