Trying to reassemble my front knuckle (90 gsx). New bearing went in fine. Hub rotated nicely until the last bit of install and is now very stiff. Not like bearing binding, and now thinking seal is backwards. Checked the Timken catalog, and conformed correct part # on box. Per the photo of same seal below, I had the lip pointed toward hub. Was it supposed to go toward the bearing? Didn’t seem like there was enough room, but never done one of these.
You may now laugh at my expense.

Weird. At least it didn’t cost much. ~$5./ea. The Timken inner (CV side) looks like that, so hopefully works fine. Just have to wait for delivery, but plenty more to do on my car. Now I get the pleasure of pulling it apart again. Great practice...?

Well, I have pulled it back apart. Of course that seal is now trashed, and I’m strongly considering cleaning all the grease from the bearing and repacking, since it required a lot of handling where fob could have gotten in. I did send an email to Timken asking about this, but not holding my breath. It would also be great to hear from a dsmer that has tried one of these Timken seals. Thanks for the two of you that already replied.
Onwards!
