Ok so I'm doing a boost leak test on my 91 Mitsubishi eclipse GSX.. Ive got it all down to a leak somewhere around the turbo.. I get the system filled to just about 10psi and i hear a quick hiss and it emptys all my air within 1second.. I spray soapy water and still can't locate. Any ideas?

From personal experience, leaking from shaft seals is not so sudden and doesn't make a pshh sound especially if he's filling the system to a mere 10 psi. UNLESS the seals were so worn and out of tolerance, but I highly doubt it.

How is your wastegate actuator connected? I'm thinking a bad inner diaphragm so it leaks the air past it really quickly.

Good thought, makes me also wonder if it could be the bov?
Still we need more info on the car.

BOV was my first thought... is your BOV recirculated? take off the recirc hose and repeat, keep a hand over the recirc to see if that is where it is all quickly escaping from.

I was under the impression that the turbo doesn’t seal until oil is flowing through the center section? I never boost leak test from the turbo. Always from the Intercooler? I have a ballbearing 6266 for the record

I also test from the ic pipe at the turbo compressor outlet... but I certainly have heard of people who do test at the compressor inlet, and dont remember hearing that being an issue before. Interesting, and worth considering.

I had a leak on the j pipe. I fixed it. I also had ones o. The throttle Bodie. I FIXXED them. I'm pretty sure it's recirculated.. I had the engine fully built and it was funning fine. Then one day it was running a little rough and I noticed the vacuum gauge would go past 10on the vacuum side and it usually sits on 15vac. So I started doing the boost leak test. I got it all sealled except for something around the turbo. It gets to about 10psi and then let's go with a quick PSHHHH .... Its sti the stock turbo. I included a pic..

Yes your bov is recirculated. Where are you boost leak testing from, to be clear? I sounds like it's the bov to me...

I hook my boost leak tester up to intake side of the turbo.. so if the big big was bad it won't hold boost or vacuum..

It may just be opening @ 10psi. Could try capping the bov off when leak testing to be sure. Generally under running conditions and boost pressure the bov won't open like that. Are you holding the throttle plate open when performing your BLT? Also, where is your bov vac line run to?

No I'm not holding the throttle plate open. And I'm not with the car so I'm not sure where bov vac line goes. But I think it's to a nipple off the turbo. When I bought the car 14years ago the owner already removed all the vacuum lines.. if that helps. Do you have a email or Facebook book so I message you quicker if you don't mind. And the noise is coming from the turbo.. I can't figure it out...there's no shaft play in the turbo.. the car doesn't smoke.. it fills up to about 8 to 10 psi and then let's go.. dosnt sound like it's coming from the bov...where is the o ring on the the turbo the one guy is talking about. Mabe at around 10psi the ring let's go. My email is. [email protected]
