Yes, it takes a washer/gasket thing. If you get one at a parts store, verify that it can tolerate exposure to gas. I tried a copper crush washer, and couldn't get mine to stop leaking, which was a bummer since it is a real pain to empty the tank repeatedly to try again. The washer was very thick, so perhaps a much thinner copper or aluminum would work, or if I had dared to reef on the plug more to tighten it. Eventually I ordered the OEM part from Japan, but I suspect NAPA, etc. have something similar.

Thanks Meth Adict! Not sure if the washer was on the tank or fell in container, it wasn't on there when I put the bolt back in. Sucks bc I have 3/4 of a tank and don't feel like draining it. I'll just drive it until it gets low.
