Very nice package. As someone who has recently put together the same thing using a 4b and tiny85 for control/soft shutdown, I can appreciate the hard work that went into this.

Can I ask what you did for dc-dc conversion of std. automotive voltages and whether you have employed protection for DC input by way of discrete components (TVS, polyfuses, etc) or one of them fancy SOP packages that has transient suppression and load dump protection+fusing?

I personally went poly+TVS for simplicity but have only recently added that also to my LED controller.. 5 years and no failures with no protection there but a semi-commercialized product is a different story.

Much of the value in this product is all the planning, research, and know-how to not only develop the software but identify, modify, integrate, and test the hardware. So respectfully no I won't share details on the dc-dc conversion, but on the topic of current protection I left the fuse protection external to the unit.

This is awesome!!!! Every time I go to the track I have my laptop on the passenger seat and the battery always died. I always wished link had this feature built in. Definitely going to pick one of these up!!!
Great work!!!!

I'm onboard to get this. Just have to see if the first event of my season is getting canceled due to the limit on gathering size up here in the northeast. The minute they say it's canceled or postponed, I'm in.

The dash-cam recording feature when using an attached camera is now not included at this time. I found an issue where oddly when recording is enabled it is recording a very low framerate in both the displayed video and recorded video. Oddly on my standalone DMS systems it records just fine which is basically the same hardware, and similar software just streamlined (it doesn't need a desktop environment and I eliminate a lot of unnecessary services to speed its boot process). I realized I had never tested the recording directly on one of my PiLink devices and when doing so found this issue today. I'm actively trying to figure out what's the cause as I'm fairly certain if it works on the DMS it absolutely should work on the PiLink device, but as of now can't include that functionality.

This doesn't really affect any existing orders as no one requested the DMS upgrade, but if anyone is considering it for this specific feature then you might reconsider. If i figure it out of course I'll enable it again.

EDIT - Nevermind, I found the bug :D Dash cam recording is restored...

DMS is something i will be looking for. Am i really the only one who is considering it?

Thanks @Boomdeeze for the order!

@ec17pse Yeah DMS really is race car focused. I didn't expect many orders for it amongst the DSM crowd where for most the mirrors work just fine. Personally I love it, digital displays and cameras for mirrors are so much better. Just look at the Aston Martin Valkyrie or the new Corvette C8.

What 7” screens do you recommend?

That depends on the use case and how much money you want to spend.

1) For just a digital rearview display with the DMS upgrade this one is decent at about $67 shipped. It's lower res than the 1080p camera outputs but for just a rearview display many people won't notice it. It could also work as a at a glance display for ECMLink I guess but that's really up to the owner. https://www.seeedstudio.com/7-inch-720x1280-HDMI-IPS-LCD-Display.html. I haven't used this particular model but I've used the 5" version and it's fantastic. Note anyone that wants to use this needs some special configuration to do so, and I suggest you ship it to me so I can make sure I get the configuration right unless you're comfortable with Linux and want to take it on yourself. No sound output with this display also, so no startup music if you care about that.

2) If you're ok with a less than camera res display but want the speakers for that oh-so-cool startup music, there's this 800p one for $69.99. 1280x800. Looks great, I built a DMS for the track store manager at VIR with it and it's here on my desk at the moment. Only caveat is it's pretty thick, about 1.5", but not really a big deal.

3) I like full detail in my displays so for my main rearview I use a 1920x1200. This one I used for a recent DMS build for a customer and it's great. Comes with a sun shade, relatively thin, super bright, and has built-in speakers. It's more expensive at $145.99 right now but I think it's a steal as the image quality is fantastic.

4) The 7" display hardware the way to me is a 1920x1200 touch screen. I have to verify it's decent quality and play around with it, as well as design and print a case for it, but if it works it should be very nice. I'm hoping to sell this in the $150-170 range, but we'll see. This would let you not only have a high res screen but also will be able to interact with ECMLink directly, though hard to say how well that's going to work as I personally use a wireless keyboard/touchpad combo when I need it.

I just realized the LEDs I had on hand for this are actually Orange, not Blue. That was a brainfart on my part, the one in my personal car is blue but when I built prototypes for testers they asked for Orange and so that's what I purchased.

Does anyone have any objections to Orange?

On the topic of 7" displays, I just ran across this one which is a bit cheaper than the ones I've used at $129 but specs wise looks great:

Ok @ec17pse, I have front facing recording working with audio. Man this took an absurd amount of work. There will be a charge for an additional USB sound card and microphone, and you'll have to run an arguably experimental build using the latest Raspbian OS (I had to use the latest build in order to compile a customized version of some software I modified). The quality actually compares to the gopro footage I get from my hero 3+ black, I may have to consider selling this as an in-car video solution for road course guys. I've pm'd you a link to check out some footage I took from running errands today.

May give this one a try! Having the touch screen capability is nice when in a pinch but will connect a wireless keyboard to it when I am out tuning! Thanks for the recommendation.

Sure thing. There's more information here if it helps:

The resolution isn't as high as what John recommends but it's been working OK for what I need. It would also be nicer if it was brighter, but it's acceptable.

For those interested I'm adding a new optional upgrade, an "Action Camera" (because I can't think of an original name for it).
  • forward facing action cam with audio.
  • roll cage mount in the works that is optional but included at no charge if requested.
  • possible OEM head rest mount if someone can provide me some measurements like the headrest rod diameters and their distance apart.
  • It's 1080p@30fps, quality looks as good as my Hero 3+ Black's footage
  • always on and recording to your USB so no more stupid GoPro batteries or remembering to power up the GoPro and start/stop recording. Also means you don't have to dig out the micro SD card from the camera, and instead deal with a nicer to use USB drive.
  • Like many dash cams it writes footage in chunks though much longer than typical (I set it to 10 minute blocks), however the blocks actually pick up exactly where the prior file left off, rather than overlap like many dashcams, which makes editing files together much easier.
  • Audio is recorded with a mono TRS microphone that you would place somewhere in your cabin, which is also an improvement over most action cameras in a car because it means you can place it away from the wind (I place mine right on the dash and it sounds so much better).
The charge for this a bit more than just the DMS camera upgrade because it also has to include a USB sound card and microphone. Those add $30 to the DMS upgrade price, for a total of $130 for this upgrade.

Here's the prototype roll cage mount (with GoPro hand screws only because I'm waiting on bolts/nuts, final unit will use my printed pieces):

So I got my test display in. This thing is blowing me away. It took a while to get it working right but man, it's gorgeous. The touch screen works well, though since I don't have my car I can't screw around with ECMLink much. Now I have to figure out how the heck to package it...

If you've ever taken pictures of an LCD screen you might understand that these pics don't actually capture how good it looks in person. It looks better than these pics are showing, and yet these shots still look pretty good.

So I'm quite new to selling anything, but just learned that in Virginia I need to collect sales tax, regardless of where the buyers are. I'm not going to charge anyone that purchases in this group buy but know that the future prices will have to have a 6% sales tax in addition to the price increase.

Only nine days left in the group buy after which you'll have to wait for a while to get your PiLink and pay a higher price.

For those that have placed orders thank you! It's more orders than I expected!

How much to include this monitor and to have it plug and plug ready to go?

If you want that 6% for that sales tax, I am willing to toss it in there!
