Maybe I am just an idiot and can;t search correctly but I cannot find any replacement fuel tanks for a 1G FWD car. Do they not sell replacement tanks for our cars? I really don't want a junkyard tank as mine is rusted to hell inside and likely that one in the junkyard will be just as bad.

Thanks guys

Yes you can order the tank with a Mitsubishi dealer or any shops that carry Mitsubishi parts unless it's discontinued. But a new tank would probably cost a lot, I guess around $700-$1000 range. So if you don't care about the price and need only a new tank, just ask them.
In case you don't mind if it's used. Should ask Miller Import Parts or somebody who is parting out their car in this forum or in some Facebook groups, you can possibly find a good used tank with 5 times less money, I guess.

Safety would be my first guess. Street legality can also be a concern for those that have that as a worry. Inspections as well.
Also, the backends of these 1Gs tend to crumple like a tin can when rear-ended.

Since you are already there why not just go with a fuel cell which would be alot cheaper. Also you will shave some weight off of the car.

Thought about a fuel cell but there are a lot of cons. If it was a full blown race car I wouldn't hesitate but driving it on the street I prefer a tank that holds a bit more fuel and also don't like the idea of fuel being inside the same passenger compartment as I am.

I really just can't believe there aren't any aftermarket fuel tanks. Hell I had a ford festiva that I bought an aftermarket replacement tank for for like 80 bucks and there has to be a way larger market for DSM tanks than ford festiva's. Just wierd

JM Fab makes a 10 gallon cell that goes in stock location and uses stock hoses for fill etc its only for AWD tho
I have the JFM 10 gallon cell. But only 10 gallon and need an external pump. Would be a good option if it's for a track only car, but not so ideal if the car is used mainly in the streets.

At least looking for a FWD drive car should be easier than an AWD, which is different. I'm not optimistic you will find a new tank at any price. Might be a question of finding a decent used one or restoring the one you've got (of course, you call enough places and maybe locate a NOS somewhere).

Mine was horrid inside, and I used a plastic sealer formula that is sold by Eastwood for this exact purpose. It was a real pain (literally; sloshing a cocktail of nasty chemicals around in the tank left me with a sore back for days). Handling and disposing of all those chemicals was a hassle, for sure, and added time to the job. But I have held a camera down inside my tank, and it is all nice and white with some kind of polymer coating now. Any rough, rusty areas are completely sealed in. Not sure how long it will stay like this, and I would have bought a new/better condition tank if I could have, but never could find one. The pump hanger and level gauge sensor are also scarce, but better for FWD, I believe.

Many folks go with aftermarket fuel pump to support higher power levels, but that's sort of a separate issue. A stock replacement Denso unit runs a little over $100, and there are cheaper brands too. A 10 gallon fuel cell will drop your range substantially, btw. That's a real-world headache, if you ask me, unless you need it to pass tech inspection at competitive events.

I have a 91 Laser FWD parts car and hadn't thought about selling anything but IDK about getting the fuel tank out or how you could get it. Indianapolis is a 10 hour drive from my house, I used to attend the Indy 500 every year, so I know.

I hear ya on wanting a factory 1g fuel tank man. My 1g had an in cabin shity fuel cell setup with an external pump from previous owner and I was just mind blown by the hacked up setup.

Like your concerns, I wanted this car for a comfort cruiser/mild street build, so I didn't want any kind of fuel cell even the ones that still mount to original tank location and factory fuel neck and lines.

I'll tell you one thing, it'll be alot easier for you to find a 1g fwd tank than it would be trying to hunt down an awd tank. Took me months to find a really good awd one, from a user on here actually! Shipping wasn't terrible either. It was about $100 to ship, which was fine by me.

You should be able to find an original 1g fwd tank in good condition easy, just make sure seller is willing to ship and should be all good.

Lol, I'm hoarding those too. ROFL
I've been inside the gas tank of all 3 of my running DSM's and they are sparkling clean so I feel super lucky. These Mid states cars have been good in that and not being complete rust buckets.

Its not just the fuel tank, its the whole dam car at my place. They literally just get thrown my way cause no one knows diddly about them. Maybe THATS why their not in the salvage yard.....hmmmm

Too bad your not along I-70. My grandparents live in Colorado Springs and I could make a dual purpose trip if you where on my way thru. May be able to ship it thru Fastenal for cheap enough if your willing to pull it but have to check if they will ship gas tanks. You'd have to pad the crap out of it tho. They are great at breaking stuff.

I'm gonna look into that cleaner crap that Mech Addict mentioned. The tank doesn;t have any holes its just corroded all up from sitting for 10 years. The gas that came out doesnt even hardly burn unless you put a torch to it. 8 gallons of free fuel for my old diesel tow rig. It'll run on just about anything

That old gas is really hard on stuff. It hasn't rusted anything around here but leaves a funky residue that clogs 3/8 lines like in my moms old flat bed truck. The tanks are still shiny but that funk clogs stuff up and her gas would NOT burn even with a torch, it did kill her weeds tho....:shhh:
And I am about 2 1/2 hrs from I70 that runs east to west thru the state. Down in the southeast corner.

Like I said, it's a bit of a pain, but seems to work well. I've not actually put fuel in my tank yet, so full disclosure on that point. But Eastwood is geared to auto restoration, so I have to have some confidence that it works (at least for a time, better than a rusty old tank).

I can share some tips if you get serious about this.
First step is to try and peer into the tank and see how badly rusted it really is. Might be easiest to remove it entirely, get the fuel (or whatever) out, perhaps spray a little starting fluid to flush/ rinse it, and then let it air-dry for days.
You'll need to find a way to seal all the openings, even the pump hole. I used leather and cork, since they aren't very reactive to solvents (like rubber, or plastic). I used about 6' of cut chain and a few handfuls of deck screws, and dropped them in and shook the piss out of it. Remove chain and screws with magnet, vacuum debris, inspect, repeat. Once there is very little debris coming out after each step, then start following the Eastwood instructions.

You could still try the chain and screws on the first washing step, too. The Muratic Acid, Etching solution, Acetone, and sealer are all very hazardous to skin, eyes, lungs, so don't skimp on safety. Heavy, long nitrile gloves, goggles glasses, work outside. Check your local solid waste authority for disposal guidelines on the spent solvents. Our county collects them for free (donation suggested).
Stretch your back thoroughly between sets of doing the twist with the tank in your arms. Maybe you can rig some shaky contraption from the garage rafters, but I just did it the brute force way. In the end, I saw all kinds of crap come out of my tank, and it looks quite good now. I wire brushed and repainted the exterior too, just to go full resto.
Good Luck-

You should put that in a tech article @Mech Addict . Very nice description you have right there!
Thank you!

Thanks, and yes, I plan on it. I've run into a host of issues on my car, and where it took a little searching or creativity to solve, I'd love to pass it along. The gas tank also required replacement of one stud, and the pump, and the fuel gauge sender (which is adapted from a universal part). Really the most of good tricks I've "discovered" are just advice from other DSMTuner member's posts. The hardest thing, as this original query poses, is obtaining nice new parts when they've been out of production for years. Then it helps to have "sources".

Well this is what the tank looks like inside. Outside as its in decent shape no holes or nothin. Let me know if you thing fixing it would be feasible. Soooo many baffles in there is what makes me think it might not work well.

OMGOMGOMG:cry::cry::cry:
I am soooo sorry. That's horrible. My tanks shine in the inside. If you cant fix it maybe you could work a trip in. I can scope that tank in my Laser and make sure its good. We can talk later if needed tho.
Dam thats alot of crap.

Yes, I agree; that one looks like a lost cause. The baffles are certainly plentiful along the tank wall, and AWD tanks do not look like that, so it's unfamiliar to me. And my tank looked bad, but not like this. I'm really surprised it's still leak-free.I have to think that with a vast majority of dsm cars being FWD, there must be some decent donors within shipping distance. Then if the one you get needs "a little" help, consider the sealer to make it near perfect. In the end, it just needs to hold fuel, and not let a lot of junk into the pickup. Looks like yours would not pass that test right now (or ever again?). It may flake rust until a hole opens. I would not do any other fuel system work until you sort this first. You probably already had that in mind.

There is a 90 eclipse at one of my local pull n save yards, unsure if it's a fwd or not, but I could find out and pull the tank for you if it's any good. I'm happy to ship it to you also. PM me

Did you try searching on Car-Part.com?
Yeah. Nearest one is over 100 miles from me, which is a little far for me to drive to possibly find another POS tank but thanks for the suggestions.

I am think I am going to throw some chain and screws in the tank and see if all the debris comes out...... if it seems to be going well than move on to muratic acid and if that looks like it cleaned it up decent I'll get the por-15 gas tank stuff and put it in. The tank seems really solid itself. It's just the 8 gallons of gas that sat in there 10 years thats gotta be cleaned out. It'll give me something to do for the next month while I sit in my underground bunker waiting for the coronavirus to go away. Lol

Have you ever thought about alot of CLR? Cleans Calcium Lime and Rust? IDK how it is on rust but it will clean the Calcium out of radiators!.
Also, if you guys haven't worked out anything, send me a PM and we can see what its worth if I can get it out for you. It is behind my garage. I'd be willing to pull the cover to look inside for a visual. How do you get into it for a look? All of my running cars are AWD, sorry for a dumb question.
Let me know.
Marty
