Do Evo 4-9 coils fit into the DSM valve cover? I'm interested in stuff like the Okada Projects coils which are a decent upgrade to the stock Evo stuff and fit under the stock spark plug cover. Hypothetically, this would remove the bulky DSM spark plug wires & coil assembly, and be an improvement on the stock ignition, without requiring a CDI, significant rewiring, etc.

There is one R35 coil setup from Australia ($500ish plus shipping and an optional harness for $270), but wiring harness manufacturers like Ohm Racing want an extra $300 or so to set up the harness for COP setups too. The R35 setup isn't that pretty to look at either... I would take the Okada setup first for simplicity if it works.

This is the kit that is commercially available. It just looks unfinished. Either way, I don't want COP on my car.

Supposed to be yes dimensionally, just require some modification to mount. Before I planned the same thing with the Okada coils. I finally went with a M&W CDI instead, so I am not sure if it would be better than the DSM coils. As much as I know there are some people that use the EVO 4-9 coils on their EVO 1-3. The pic is on an EVO 3. It doesn't fit under the stock spark plug cover though.

Oh that's perfect. It kind of looks like the coil could drop a lot more to clear if they were bottom-mounted to the bracket. It might be doable with a stock cover.

If you want to use a setup using denso coils I designed a system for Spoolinup that eliminates the stock coils (obviously) but also the ptu and hooks up like stock and runs off a stock ecu. I should have a picture of it in my profile on my car. He's not officially selling it because he's too busy selling the Evo only stuff but he might be interested in selling a set of you ask.

I don't think they look that bad... (R35)

Not to bust your balls, but those are not R35 coils, they are Toyota-style "Denso" coils. Quite inferior to R35 coils. Also unavailable from anyone but Chinese manufacturers now.

The issue is not the mounting, it's the boot length on the bottom of the coil. I guess if you found custom boots that would allow dropping the coil down, you could try and cram a cover on them. IMHO it's better to leave them uncovered for cooling purposes.

I'm a big fan of the R35 coils on all sorts of engines, they work great, easy to get replacements and small easy to work with size. (my vr4 runs this R35 cop kit)

There are a ton of great COP options but for me the R35 coils are the way to go for 95% of the builds i have to tune or deal with. (those that need more spark for super high boost methanol fuel builds i always use the AEM/Haltech "smart coils" (same coils just branded differently).

Any 1G with the above Velocity Elements, R35 COP installed and any comments on the wiring or install if you get the harness?

Thanks

When adding these do we need to use a booster like for example ARC2, or is a booster not necessary?

Brewed Motorsports recommends a stand alone ECU to control the dwell for 1G cars.

Then you'll still have to connect the 6 pin custom or maybe someone has an adapter for a plug and play.

Well, and for 2g's. There's no way to control dwell with the stock ECU. I see one mention of it on the webpage in the middle of the description and no mention of it in the post above.
