So I noticed I have a small fluid leak on my 1G, and I do some searching, and it seems that the fluid is coming from around the base of the gear select lever, the one that is held to the trans via roll pin.

The selector has a rubber gromit at the base, which I assumed was there to keep debris from entering the trans, but I seem to be leaking fluid from that area, never heard/seen this before.

Any input?

Thanks.

Here is a picture (I know this isn't a 1G trans, but its just to depict where it's leaking from )

Thanks a lot Jim, anyway to change this without taking the trans apart?

Edit: nvm, it's what I assumed. I've tired to get those roll pins out of the selector before with no avail, guess I'll just deal with the leak...

i have changed that seal on my 89 mirage and it was a pain . you have to take the trans apart to do it

And I replaced mine this past winter, that seal # was not right for my trans. It was a different size. I ended up using a seal from a spare case I had on hand... except that seal must not have been good either because mine is leaking again this year.

Possibly because mine is a FWD, the seal # is different, but I don't have CAPS to check that.

Just thought I would add to this post.

You can change the seal without removing or tearing the trans down. You have to remove the shift shaft arm on top which is held in place by a pin. The pin only comes out one way and is pressed in very tight. You need to use a serious air hammer and pop the pin out. Then you can slide the arm off and the seal is right there and slips right off.

Again, you need a serious air hammer to get it off, or there is no hope of removing the pin. The pin comes out on the front side, so you need to have the air hammer pointing toward the front side of the car and the pin will pop out toward the radiator. If you go the wrong way, you will force the pin in tighter and then you're really screwed.

I keep the seals in stock. Shoot me an email at [email protected] if you want one.

Good luck!

Jack

Just chiming in here after following Jack's (and Tim's from Jack's Transmissions) advice on this. Followed his exact procedure and changed the seal without pulling the trans off or apart! Will make a short tech guide with some pics to make it easier for others.
