i have a 98 2.4l n/t with a auto transmission. I made a sharp left turn and heard a grinding sound from the trans. i can best describe it as it sounded like a rock got sucked into the torque converter. the grinding sounds went away after just a few seconds but it did put it into limp mode. I turned it off and started it back up and drove it home. when i got home i noticed it was making a strange sound at idle almost like a rod knock but its definitely coming from the transmission. it started shifting a little funny right before this all happend it would go through 1st and 2nd alright but it would almost skip 3rd and go into o/d fall on its face then kick back down to 2nd and shift normally any ideas on why its shifting bad or what that awful noise could be. i checked the starter the teeth were slightly rounded off at the tips but it didn't seem to be in bad enough shape to make the noise i was hearing any suggestions on what i should check first would be appreciated. it did throw a code for the torque converter pressure solenoid when it went into limp mode

First things first, check your transmission fluid level PROPERLY, this means warmed up in park, put your foot on the brake and shift from park, to reverse, neutral, drive two, drive one, leaving it in each position for at least 10 seconds, then starting from where it should now be drive one, run backwards leaving it in each position again for 10 seconds until you hit neutral, go no further, leave it in neutral with it running and the parking brake set go out under the hood, pull the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert it, pull it out again and this will be the level of fluid, if its low top it off with ATF +4 nothing else!

so i went ahead and pulled the trans pan to see what the fluid and filter looked like. the atf was still pretty bright red and did not smell bad or burnt. there was some metal on the magnets . no chucks just some glitter. im not sure if its a normal amount from wear or something worse. . i also found that one of the bolts going into the torque converter has been hitting something which would explain the knocking sound. my question is now what would cause that bolt to start rubbing it was not lose. and how much is a acceptable amount of metal in the pan any feedback would be awesome

thanks for the info that was the very first thing i did fluid level was good

Crankwalk can cause that bolt to hit, or a converter that has ballooned or even a front pump failure can push the converter out, the fact that the flexplate is lime green makes me suspicious that someone has gone in there and jacked around with things.

yeah i dont know about that green it was like that when i bought it about 6 months ago. none of the 3 bolts for it even match. the previous owner gave me receipts when i bought the car for a full rebuild of the engine its had 3k miles on it since then if the paperwork is legit. im going to pull the trans this weekend and see whats up
