here is how it turned out after a bit of die-grinding for my TB elbow on the VRSF pipe

Traded an extra VC for an RVR intake manifold a couple days ago. A local kid (that I met by flagging down his 1g like a crazy person) had damage to his and I have been trying to talk him out of this manifold for a while. He has no intention of ever running a 2g head. I still kinda owe him, but he broke my vac bleeder...

Cool to have a local DSMer buddy.

Well I guess I am just in the mood to experiment with different turbine housings... I ordered two different T3 divided hx40 housings in the last couple days.

The first one is a Holset oem part 16cm t3 divided with no internal wastegate provisions. It has a 6 bolt round discharge flange. (yes I know that is not the side shown, but this was the only pic provided.)

The second one is an aftermarket housing with 4 bolt round discharge flange.

I might hack this one up and weld a v-band on it bc I cant find one with proper size for hx40, no internal wg, and v-band discharge. Keeping it narrow helps improve the exhaust bend radius leaving the turbo, so the oem internal gate housings arent ideal (not to mention interrupted flow).

I am looking at options before sending the final choice to MF (before they start my manifold w/ hot parts).

Seller of the second housing is in Wuhan. Says it might be a while before it ships due to 66k infections of this new corona virus. Crap! Thats bad...

Hahahaha right? But really the non-pressurized cabin of a cargo plane will be far too cold to sustain a virus. WHO has information out about handling packages from China.

Either way, Lysol is cheap...

I should mention I also located a 14cm2 housing for the HX40 and that is on the way as well. People call these 14cm2 housings hen's teeth because they are hard to find. Hopefully it fits!

It looks like there may be potential to test the 14cm2 vs 16cm2 housings in the near future. I have ordered two non-gated, Holset oem housings that use the same discharge flange. If I am really lucky, I can send both to MF and they can be swapped without changing anything in the downpipe/hot parts kit. If the 18cm non-gated housing used the same discharge I would have grabbed all three. It would be valuable to have back-to-back data...

So I got a couple parts of the drain line setup. This is what I thought I would try before seeing MF sells a drain kit. I knew it would take some modification to clear the compressor cover, but I might as well try it since they are already paid for ($12)

IKR! It hides pretty nicely when standing in front of it looking in...

I will add however that I did keep some upward pitch to the sensor. I didn't want the bung on the lowest point in the pipe just in case there are any condensation issues. Wouldn't want to pool moisture into the sensor...

So I was about to setup this flange on the lathe at work to open it up to match the pipe diameter MF uses for the downpipe... one of the machinists said he wasn't busy and volunteered to do it. I left it with him and the size was written on it in sharpie (now crossed out). I get it back the next day and check it, measurement written on it under original. CRAP! Dude blew the dimension... creeping up to 3.1" instead of 3.01". Now it's more than 2mm oversized for the pipe.

No big deal right? Well kinda. Cant find this flange anywhere in the states apparently, so I check price on getting replacement from sweden (source of this one). $65 bc of $38 shipping. CRAP!

So today I ordered a thicker (1/2" vs 3/8") sheet of 6"x6" 304 stainless, due to be delivered to my office Monday, 3/9. I modeled the flange and saved off a .dxf for the EDM at work. Machinist owes me =) . Hopefully monday we can run this program and I'll have a flange again... CRAP!

Maybe I'll use this one after throwing a tailpipe expander into a 3" pipe and routing it out the fender for a track exhaust option... hmm...

Did a bit of investigation to see if using the same hot parts kit on both the 16cm2 and 14cm2 holset housings would be a possibility. I could tell they looked really close, but they are complex and tough to measure precisely - unless you have access to handy dandy 3d metrology equipment - which I do.

I scanned both housings, and aligned them based on the input flange plane and two of the bolt holes on the input flange.

On the left is each housing, then on the right is a preview of the current surface alignment. The white is one housing and the blue is the other. The spotted white/blue flange surface is a good indication that the model alignment is fairly good at that feature on both parts.

The 3D comparison shows how different the two housings are. Anything that is in it's natural color is different enough from the other housing that it is out of range +/-.010". Anything colored shows a difference in position from one housing to the other. Scale on right.

So this shows pretty conclusively that they have a near identical input and output flange footprint. Therefore, I can swap between them as desired for spool or overall flow. I can also do some back to back testing with no other differences. Could be neat!

Here's a bonus cross sectional view that illustrates a large physical difference in the external geometry. This area is also where you can physically see that the nozzle is tapering more sharply on the 14cm than it does on the 16cm.

The padding worked out flawlessly!! Nice solution. Showed up red and blinging - no damage
Oh amazing news. I shall make sure to keep this in the memory banks as a solution.

So my fancy new nhra legal catch pan arrived with some minor damage from Vamos Design & Fab. Pretty pissed off. Poor packaging with almost no protection. Told Byran and he politely said I'm shit out of luck.

Maybe I need to relax before I respond to his email.

Am I crazy to be a little pissed off? This thing cost me $510 shipped.
