Have any of you seen these baffled oil pans from Racefab in New Zealand? I know not a lot of guys need these for street or drag use, but seems like a worthwhile upgrade for road racing and autocross guys! The pan is $700NZ which is $448 USD. Not a bad deal if it works. Evo 7-9 pan is the other one in the pictures.

If you want one, better hurry up. Rob is considering discontinuing them because nobody buys them.
I'm getting mine done, I'm just waiting on some new pickup tubes so I can send them over because cores are required.

Spoke to some members about this a while ago. I said its a decent way to go but alot of people did not think the price was right.

The old evos dont get a huge amount of custom anymore so thats likely why they will stop the early version but the later evos will still be done. We do a good amount of later evo pans at work about 15 a year so its still required for them unless they go drysump

You can read through threads like this one: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/road-course-oil-starvation.513720/page-3
...to get a better understanding of why modified pans or dry sumps would be beneficial for stuff like autoX or road racing. From my own empirical research that I've done in the past, a combination of adding baffle plates AND an oil accumulator solved our issue of sudden oil starvation on left-hand turns. We were restricted in how tall the sump could be, if I recall correctly the total height of the sump was no more than 3 inches and was completely flat (this was on a Formula Student car).

Essentially, what the baffles do is they add a barrier to the oil (if placed correctly) so it can remain concentrated at and around the pickup for longer. And what the added sump volume does is it simply makes more oil available at that specified point. So, in most cases, if you clearance allows it, a set of baffles and increased oil volume should take care of your oil starvation. However, as some people in that thread have mentioned, quite a bit of oil is drawn into circulation as the engine runs. And even more so if you're at very high RPMs. It's not a myth that these cars like to starve the bottom end at 7k+ RPM from oil, especially if you've got balance shaft deletes and so on. So adding more total oil in the sump is good. As for the accumulator, that can be a band-aid if you really can't work around the other two alternatives, but that also isn't a straight fool-proof method!

Most DSM and Evo123 owners are cheap and/or don't use the car in a way that would require the pan. For me, $700 NZD is a small price to pay compared to nuking an expensive engine on a high-g turn from oil starvation. Considering there has never been a readily available aftermarket option for the 7-bolt, and the large number of 2G DSMs and Evo123s that race, there really should be a market for these.

2g's yes evos no, most are rotted and i barely see any at shows anymore.

Maybe we can get a small group buy going for the roadcourse and autox guys here? Send over all our pans at once and maybe save on shipping and such? I know it's going to be worthwhile for my car as well. I was talking with John Freund on instagram and he was saying he does okay with the stock pan and an accusump, but there are definitely dips in pressure that he would rather not have.

You dont need full baffle trap doors for it all to work, mine is not trapped but its lightly baffled. The pickup is fully surrounded and it does not allow oil to fling out when turning left. My oil pressure does not move now on them long fast lefts. Oil capacity is an added bonus but not critical really unless you feel as if its needed. I only added roughly 1QT which is more then enough

I'd rather be safe than sorry. If I could skip the accusump that would be great, it's just extra complexity, and we all know how complexity works on the race track.

Dont need to be safe though, i have proven it does not need to be added. People think they need certain things because its been done and its what they must have. But truth is they dont need it in most cases. It does depend on situations and car specific. If you make the pickup just right and surround it well and enclose the pickup and main oil location trap doors will not be required

Do you use an accusump or no? If you do, how do you know it's not necessary?

No accusump no, i wanted to avoid that at first, it was going to be my last resort if the pan i made did not work out but it turned out it did and decided to hold off on buying the kit. I log the oil pressure and used to see it drop on the long lefts we got on our roads, now i see only a 1-2psi drop where as before it was a heck of alot more.

I badly need one of those. This is my pan now and I already have an accusump, although I think the initial damage was beforehand.

Anyone have any better ideas on shipping to NZ?

Got a UPS quote of $271. 6 day shipping.:cry:

USPS is always cheapest on international shipping.

Do you have a Kiggly HLA? That’s key too.

Results seem to be really great for the evo guys. 80psi vs 30psi with the stocker.

With the interest in this thread... @ec17pse should build us a pan like his. Group buy with minimum 10?

Shipping 1 way to NZ is nearly $300. The cost with shipping will be over $1000. I’d rather give Bobby the money.
So many projects LOL, it has been something im considering as a home diy kit, either a basic or advanced setup. Cost wise its more effective to get you lot to weld it in or find someone then keep shipping over then back again as it costs and builds up real fast. I shall see if i can work on something slowly while im working on other projects

Bobby for President!

haha

Bobby, what about some kind of spacer that allows us to bolt on a 6bolt pan? Something similar to the picture below with the correct curvature to fit the 7bolt. We could then use the moroso pan.

Thats something i did consider before making mine, what turned me away was the fact i dont like the moroso pan but having a flat surface to start from would be great then having to work out the curve and pressing it each time.
