Whats up fam. So almost done wrapping up my auto swap on my 1990 talon awd. Fired it up yesterday and only enguages in drive.

When shifting into reverse engine rpm doesnt not change. When put in drive rpms drop.

It free revs in reverse. And when in drive it seems to not want to move forward much.

NOTES: Manual diff is still on the car.

Fourced four box controlled but i have not powered up transmission or shift box.

Cant sleep thinking about this. Will my solenoids not being energized cause this or am i looking at a mechanical issue?

Side notes: I replaced end clutches, welded center diff, added kiggly saddle, and installed a translab shift kit.

Transmission was purchased so idk if it has been a ongoing issue.

could be a possible issue with the shift kit install. also the not wanting to move forward could be that with no power to the solenoids its sitting in 3rd gear.

Reverse is mechanical- it’s likely an internal problem. The first time I tore one down I mis-aligned the center-support O-ring that feeds it, couldn’t back it out of the garage LOL

I didnt open up the transmission. Only shift kit and end clutches. The orings you speak of are on the front clutch drum right?

That makes sense so its in 3rd right now.

So should i remove the valve body?

Wouldnt the pressure control solenoid need to power on? Or reverse absolutely all mechanical?

here found this post. tim says it best on things to check. theres an o ring that goes between the valve body and case. common thing to happen. ill try to find the picture of it to better explain that.
edit. heres a link to that post that has pics

Had a customer with a similar problem, ended up being the valve body. He purchased the trans off me , I never opened it up but he had it built and it wouldn’t go into reverse of forward. I rebuilt another core and sent it to him. Trans shifts awesome now

Thanks guys i am aware of the oring at topic. I have prior experiences with valve bodies and its something im sure i double checked on assembly. I guess ill be removing the valve body. And checking that oring and make sure assembly is correct.

Can it be a issue with the end clutch i installed?

The issue with his valve body from what I could see was the internals binding up. His core was exposed to water at some Point. The pistons weren’t able to move freely inside the bores. The core of was rebuilt with a shift kit by a reputable builder. His trans worked until he brought it back home. After shutting it off it wouldn’t go into gear or reverse

If you removed the valve body and it is not going into reverse then your problem is going to be that the o ring on the backside of the valve body is either missing or it has a bad o ring. If your car is not going into any gears or stuck you probably didn't align the manual valve when you re-installed the valve body back into the transmission. When you drop the pan look by the side and you should be able to see the valve.

Guys i believe i found my issue with no reverse so after watching ipt video several times i found that i had used the dark blue spring for the pressure reducing valve and i noticed that the spring is too wide causing the valve to just be floating. I installed the light blue spring and now the valve is under tension!!!!!!! I hope this helps others in the future.

notice how one of the springs is too wide to go down into the valve bore. It used to be dark blue but now its white but i did find some dark blue spots on it the fluid must have took the paint off.

Please note the spring does not go before the valve i was only showing you guys how the dark blue spring is too wide to go down in the bore causing the valve to have no spring tension!!!!!
