I can try, but they never responded to email. I suppose it's worth calling, but I am afraid I will need someone at china holset that speaks English or something.

It turns out the 4006710186 number verification system was discontinued on Jan 29, 2016, based on this update notice. So it will have to be verified manually if at all possible. Photo shows notice, and new code system with 16 digit code instead of 12 like the tag on this turbo.

So it could be new old stock or a copy of old stock. Still thinking fake, but the seller said he will have china cummins customer service email me directly after finding someone who can do so in english on Monday. Sounds like another bullshit long shot, but he will have time to respond to my dispute, so we will see how that plays out.

Best way to confirm is to take it apart and measure the wheels. Counterfeits usually don't have the same specs as authentic ones. You can also remove the compressor wheel to take pictures of the internals/ thrust hardware.

@lasthope05
I am afraid to disassemble any further for fear they wont accept the return. we shall see...

I did peek through the drain and saw a strange drip tray tab. Does anybody know if a legit holset has a part like that inside... I haven't researched it yet, but it may show a glaring difference...

All turbos have that. It's the oil deflector plate. Removing the compressor cover and turbine housing would be fine if your worried about tearing into it.

Okay so the seller sent me like a dozen pics and screenshots of old receipts from the authorized holset dealer in Shiyan city. He also had them check the anti piracy code and they were able to confirm everything about the turbo based on the code.

He also went to the dealer and took a picture of their wall plaque stating they are authorized Holset dealer.

I think it might be legit.

I am going to take it apart this week and check the internals. If its junk, I will file a claim with paypal and hope for the best. If the housings are sized properly I may be able to put in a new holset chra.

If I take it apart and it's real, cool beans, new genuine hx40 for $450.

I pulled out the exhaust housing. What size should the wheels be? 76mm/64mm? does anyone know if that is precisely what it should be? are 76mm and 64mm exact wheel dimensions?

thanks!

Since Justin has been MIA, I found this and am pretty sure it is correct, as are you I believe, Will.

  • HX40 Super Has Billet Wheel (60mm x 86mm)
  • HX40 7 blade has Cast Wheel, (Same Measurements and Profile) (60mm x 86mm)
  • HX40 Super Has 10 Blade 64mm x 76mm Turbine
  • HX40 7 blade Regular Has 12 Blade HX40 64mm x 76mm Turbine

Marty

If that's a copy, it's a legit one. From everything I can see it certainly looks the part.

Fake nor not, I can absolutely appreciate @rabenne taking the time and putting forth real money and effort to get to the bottom of this. If nothing else, this archive will serve to educate plenty of others in the future.

As was already mentioned, I don't think I'd be satisfied until I took it apart and verified the internals were legit. It's hard to copy stupid shit like snap rings. Parts like that are usually where counterfeiters will save cost and take risk by not using factory parts or exact copies, since they aren't readily visible.

Please keep the updates flowing. This is an awesome thread.

If you've already disassembled everything, you should catalog pictures or each part here in this thread. That should help everyone spot any fakeness, if there is any to spot.

Brett,

So far I only pulled the exhaust housing to measure the TW. I am not loving the measurements I got - 76.27mm is leading me to believe that it is not genuine. Everything I see on the web says it should be 76mm not 76.27mm or 76.3mm. I measured using 2 different digital calipers.

I have already disputed this transaction with paypal and shared evidence of the discrepancy. I will let you guys know how it gets resolved. The seller is still claiming it is full legit (wild and angry), and agreed to a refund, but only if I pay the return shipping. I did NOT agree to that, and based on paypal policies I am not responsible for any part of these charges.

If he wants to pay to ship it back, and refund my full total, that's fine.

So it is still looking like bad news. I am also speaking with someone from Cummins USA about this turbo now, but the back and forth is very slow. They have the tag info, and hopefully will confirm or deny its authenticity - eventually.

Correction on the measurements. I was working from memory earlier. The two caliper measurements are written on the cardboard. 76.25/76.36 64.02/63.97

The black "marks" on the turbo are from some type of grease, I am assuming from assembly.

Man Will, as much as I love you, I can't just take my genuine Super 6 apart. :pJustin and I were both bidding on it and it was for a bus (RV) and the guy just had his unit rebuilt because something about the one he sold me wasn't a "direct fit". Justin told me if I didn't buy it he was. Came in ALL THE HOLSET BOXES which was a super good sign. :sneaky:

Will, tell me where to measure and I can get you a spec. This was my 7 blade and the inducer is still good, Justin sent it back to me as a memory LOL.

Sorry had to take pictures from the computer screen, but I could measure the induce. Tell me where to measure at.

Marty, I am having a permission error trying to view the attachments. The most conclusive for me right now would be the turbine wheel inducer and exducer diameters, but I need to fully disassemble to find out what the guts really look like. I dont really think I have a way to cleanly remove the giant snap ring and get it back on cleanly if this thing needs to be returned for a refund. I am sure we have something at work I could borrow, perks of working for a multi-billion dollar tool manufacturer...

If you have a 76/64 turbine wheel and it measures to 76.0mm and not 76.2mm-76.3mm then I wouldn't mess with looking inside because the risk of damage would put my refund in jeopardy.

The thing that bothers me the most is 76.2mm is exactly 3.000" - so is the actual size 76.2mm? and everyone just says 76mm? Or does the fact that mine is 76.2mm-76.3mm prove conclusively its a copy?

I remember seeing people talking about the measurements being slightly off on the copies. So, what is my spec? Please!

I am going to shoot G-pop shop an email to see if they know. I am sure they have done some Holsets

Justin was an amazing asset to this forum. I hope he is okay and whatnot.

I recently (this past October) emailed Justin and received a reply within 24 hours.
