1997 Talon Tsi awd, bone stock, 5 speed. Transmission shifts fine, goes into every gear perfectly.

However, the transmission (or something in the driveline) is noisy when on the throttle. It's barely noticeable off the gas. It does it in all gears.

No idea when it started, I just got the car like this. Here's a video, you can hear it really well at 0:18

Any ideas? Rebuild the tranny?

I just found this thread, sounds like the same issue.

Sounds like it will need a rebuild.

So...any updated YouTube vids on this car? :) *Off topic* L O L
Just got it, shooting videos now. I plan on 1 every week once I get going!

I found a couple local good 2gb transmissions for sale, I'll probably just end up buying one and swapping it. Once I come up with some cash.

TBH it sounds like the TOB to me. It has that similar almost grinding/vibrating sound to it as when the TOB goes out. Worth a shot to just toss in a new OEM TOB and see if it helps. Also, what trans fluid is in it? I've had it really...really rarely happen when/if someone has used crappy cheap fluid in their trans.

Also: Looking forward to more videos man! It's been forever. And welcome to the 2G club! Still got the 1g? :D

Of course! I'll die with that car.

Would a bad TOB only make the noise under throttle though? Off the throttle the noise goes away completely.

I'm thinking about doing a quick clutch/pp/tob swap to see if it goes away.

If you drop the trans you'd be silly not to at least check shaft end play. I've seen many a bad bearing in a trans especially the intermediate shaft.
If you're not afraid of it tear it down and inspect. First time I did one I was surprised how easy it was. Relatively speaking. Shafts come out as a unit.

Seconded for the intermediate shaft bearing. Mine had a similar low rpm rattle and eventually lost 4th gear. Sounded like I had a socket or something rattling against the body when under load
Is there a walkthrough online somewhere for replacing it? Is that something I can inspect while the trans is in the car still? Or do I need to pull it?

I just finished my 1g clutch job and my back still hurts : P

You have to pull it. Talk to me after you've done 8 in a weekend.
You could check play while it's in the car but it will be a huge pain.

I never bothered. I found a local car being parted out from a wreck and got a new transmission

Upon inspecting my shifter cables I determined the bushings were destroyed and most likely contributed to the demise of my transmission.

I tried to track the nosie before that, when I removed the passengers side axle and tried to install it again, the axle would not fully seat back inside the transmission. You could see inside the housing that even the output bearing was destroyed enough internally to just junk the trans

Its hard to see but the internal teeth part of the trans that spun the axle basically shifted down an inch and I couldnt get the axle all the way back in
