"Project unknown". Ahh yes, sounds very familiar!

There was a mods list that included things like "Tine Coilovers", "Fuelube FPR and Filter", "blown turbo with zero shaft play", LOL

I have a parts car to finish pulling apart before I dig into this one. I actually raced him a couple weeks ago and this car was very quick. Not quite as quick as mine (also 50 trim) but quick enough that I knew he wasn't on a 16g. The car wasn't smoking at all, at that time. Since then it started pouring smoke, and it looks like the exhaust is getting oil dumped straight in. The turbo is toasted, but maybe rebuild-able.

I initially wanted it for parts, but after seeing how straight the sheet metal is, there is a chance I send it off for paint this winter instead of my silver car. then ill swap it all over into the painted shell in the spring.
Or maybe it will end up a drag shell?
Or maybe it will end up a parts car?
Or maybe I will fix the oil leak and sell it as is?

Project Unknown!

Well......after fixing ALL the stuff.. she runs good.
New HKS 264/272's, a timing belt job AND putting the CAS into the correct orientation sure helps them run better.
I am just rolling my eyes AGAIN...about previous DSM "mechanics".....but its a good feeling knowing you saved a car that shows over 200k on it.
Enjoy and comment! :thumb:

My GOD it looks and sounds so incredible!! I am extremely jealous! I hope to have mine looking and sounding like that soon enough! Mine's in a bit more rough shape than yours. Cheers!

Thanks. Not hard work but you have to be sure you have the timing on the money. I love the car, after we bled the clutch, it is very nice to DD. :thumb:

My son wanted a video of the exhaust note with the new HKS 264/272 cams so, thanks son! :thumb:

Thats my crappy S7 but uploaded via the new DSMTuners video uplink.
Try it out sometime. :thumb:

Aha actually the S7 takes really good pics though! It's one of the reasons I haven't bought a new phone for 3 years now.
When I go searching for pics of DSM stuff I want to see, when the pics I find are old, they are usually so bad. I hope that all those "standard" pics will be re-taken by people as we go forward, now that ordinary cell phone cameras are so much better. Not to mention real stand-alone cameras which are also better than they were.

Mine is just old. My son's S6's camera is MUCH better for some reason so I have him shoot video for me.

You should get a dash cam so you can record your races! Amazon has one where the screen is the entire width of a rearview mirror (which it replaces) and it records 1080p front and rear simultaneously. Check out the video clip of mine in my profile.

Want and NEED a GoPro (hint Santa)....... :D but I like the idea of simultaneous front and rear camera's. :thumb:

Last week I ordered a new OEM timing belt tensioner, partly to see what date would be on it. Would it be newer than 2015?
It says 2016.
Kind of inconclusive as to whether production has ended or not.
Here’s a photo. This tensioner came from STM.
It came in a bag that says “Made in Korea”. I noticed that the Gates and ACDelco tensioners shown on Rock Auto say “Made in China”.
I’d be interested in knowing if anyone gets one of these newer than 2016!

OEM 1g tensioner bought Nov 2019.JPG

I'd like to hear from anyone also, and know they work!

So the "Phantom" GSX had a fuel pump that was loud when I got her and has become very quiet now so I swapped in a Wally 255 that I had and put on the AFPR that came with the car. Got in a hurry as I wasn't feeling the best and forgot to put the Ethanol sensor in line, I will get that in. Adjusted FP and took her for a drive only to have the radiator spring a leak (the odometer says 294k). I had been smelling anti-freeze but couldn't find it anywhere so it must have been seeping. Well that went to a trickle last night so back into the shop last night, and a radiator swap is going to happen today or this week so I can drive her again, which is so much fun now. I had to put my spare 90 GSX shifter in, as the original was the sloppiest I have ever seen (I will rebuild it for later use). I have all of the parts to put the FMIC on and an FP mani/16g setup just laying there off of my Blue Talon, so that is going to happen very soon also, with the FIC 1120's and then she is done with upgrades and going on SD. I have one last gauge to install and that is the AEM Wideband. As soon as that is in, the rest of the stuff will go on! Thanks for following along!

Well we can all smile about this little story.
I came home from work today and my son, Trevor, had removed the old radiator (wasn't the original, nor original fans, some ebay fans with a shroud) that was leaking on the bottom and or side. I grabbed my 92 Talon radiator and started to put it in since I am running an aluminum radiator in it and the original was sitting against the wall. We start to move stuff over and we see a blueish cast on some of the fins. I am pretty sure that was showing signs of a leak too. I told him, "hang on, let me check the parts GSX" and came back with an original 100k radiator with STOCK FANS AND CONNECTORS. Thank the DSM gods for that and the fact that the owner hadn't hacked the plugs off of the cars harness.
I blew it all out with compressed air and installed it AND THE STOCK FANS and plugged them in and VIOLA, we are back in business!
I want to give a HUGE THANKS TO TREVOR! THANK YOU SON, FOR ALL YOU DO!
He has been building these cars and tuning them with me all along so I can't wait for you all to meet him when he gets his profile up.
Couple pics of the STOCK SETUP!!!
Sure is nice to have FREE parts and a super son!

Ok so we had an Aeromotive 340 for the GSX but it ended up being locked up so I threw a random Wally 255 I had into her and I think she is now running OUT OF GAS.....DAM.
No wideband yet but one came with the car, an AEM unit so I need to get it wired in so I can log and see what the hell is going on. She feels like she is starved for fuel at 5k, just stumblin now at that point. Idk what exactly is goin on but my next project is wiring in that WB so we can make sure its just runnin outta fuel.
I still thank my son for all the help, we're gonna get this into a fine DD with a bit of "ump" :thumb: but I'm feeling like she is just plain ass runnin outta gas at the moment and the tank is at 3/4. Bummer for a day or so.

Both sons and I are the DSM men in our area. Older son is 2g, younger helps me on my 1g's :)
We all learn from each other and have become pretty good with these cars, hell no one else is.
I am the mechanical teacher, the boys and I all learn from each other on tuning and creative ideas for our cars and I am proud as hell of both of them! I wouldn't be in this game or forum if it wasn't for the boys.
Do you have any idea why the Aeromotive 340 would be locked up? Corrosion inside? Debris inside?
It was in my sons E85 car, had about 500 miles on it and he changed to a Wally 450. I asked him last night if it was runnin on E before he sold it to me and he said yeh. I told him to pickle pumps and injectors if you have run E in them
LUCKILY.....I banged around on the dead pump while applying 12v from my power supply to it (and it was dead shorted, wires got hot FAST), and got it to spin but squeal. I sprayed the inlet and outlet with WD40 and ran the pump again for a second or 2 and it got quiet then started to squeal again so I shot the lube to her again, re-fired it for a second and then hosed it some more and it has sat all night. I really think it is going to work, but will test it in solvent or kerosene to make sure it pumps before I go to the trouble of trying it. It will be a lot easier this time though, since all of the rusty connections and nuts/etc have just been apart. Should be a hour, maybe a tad more to try it out and see. I wish the WB was in so I could see if it is going lean on me, so I am prioritizing that over the holidays I hope!
And speaking of, HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL! THANKS FOR FOLLOWING!

Yeah this is something I've been thinking about lately because my car is just now running again after sitting since the end of March with a broken transmission.
Normally I have ~E20 in it through the winter and ~E50 in it for the summer. I had E50 in it when the trans broke, and I never took the fuel out of it.

So ER just finished up the trans install and started it to do some checkout at low power and they think it is all Ok. But there won't be any high power done with it until I get break-in time on the new trans and clutch disc.

BTW back in 2015 when ER told me they wanted to put the 2 Walbro 255's in series into the car for fuel, I kind of tried to get them to use "E85 compatible" pumps instead of the old Walbro 255's. Lucas said no, the Walbro 255 is still the most reliable pump out there, even in E85. And those guys were some of the first ones doing flex fuel with ethanol. So I figured, Ok, do it your way!
I'm still interested in other pumps though. Like maybe the Fuelab 49441 in-tank 340, which I think is "footprint identical" to the Wally 255. Plus it has a double barb on the outlet pipe, instead of the single barb on the Walbro.

Oh hell, dump both of those and get the 525LPH Hellcat pump. I have it in my Blue Talon. Same body as the 450. Runs about $160. Should be all the pump 90% of us need. :thumb:
It is even quiet, not a noisy pump or one that howls at you, although I did put a insulator on the body like the 255's have then hose clamped it to the hanger and ran the supplied hose from the pump to the outlet and was done!

Well that pump flows really a lot at idle and low load where you don’t want a lot. I would probably want it to run on low voltage until boost happens. It also uses a lot of amps all the time, which again, I would want a low voltage mode. All that stuff is worked out real nice on my car now with the 2 pumps staged in series and a boost activated switch that turns the inline pump on and off.

I would probably only change it if I felt the pump life was too short, which I haven’t seen yet.

So only one pump runs and it pushes or pulls through the other pump until boost? Interesting setup. I like hearing there are so many options when it comes to getting the fuel to the rail.

Too much flow at idle is irrelevant if your pressure regulator can bypass the excess quickly enough.

The amperage draw is something I am interested in researching a bit. I already run a huge electric motor on the column and a tiny honda battery LOL

Yes the intank pushes fuel through the inline when there is no boost, because the inline is not powered then.
I was skeptical at first, because I didn't know how much pressure drop there would be across the inline pump. I mean, you wouldn't want that to be ridiculous high.
I still don't know. I've never measured it. I just know it works and it is completely seamless (the transition) as near as I can tell.

Marty, do you think you're getting MAS (MAF) overrrun with that stock 1g MAS? It's been a long time since I've even thought about a 1g mas but I remember they had an overrun issue.
