Installing evo rear diff-having issues

Those that have rebuilt their read diff, I'm installing an evo8 diff into my 1g case. I'm using the very smallest shims of the kit and still can't install the diff with both shims. The only thing I can think of is the new bearings aren't pressed on enough but they look and feel like they're pressed all the way. I verified this by comparing them to my 3 bolt diff sitting around. Any thoughts?
 
Measure to the millimeter the total length of the diff that you removed and the new one that's going in end to end.
 
Is the evo rear much stronger?
Its stronger and you go to a clutch type diff. The advantage of this diff is you can induce over steer with the car instead of under steer. This is caused by the clutch locking the rear diff. It made a huge difference on my vr4.
I think I figured it out. I still have the evo ring gear on...
Are you by chance using my write up on the install? The evo ring gear wont work. Different gear ratio.

Hmm, I just realized that I am indeed using my dsm ring gear....now I'm stumped.
 
It turns I already had the dsm gear on..it's been a couple months since I last messed with this project. I even tried the dsm diff top (?) and it's still too wide for any of my shims. Totally lost.
