I don't have much I can add to this as I was to busy with the cars to take pictures and such but ill try and post some that were sent to me.
Was a very crazy week. Was my first time going to WCF and all I can say is I will be back for sure. What an amazing race filled with such incredible cars. I hate how our day came to an end Sunday but we will be back even faster next year. WCF is a brutal race that really tests your car. I love the dsm shoot out but WCF is a monster racing event. If you haven't gone I highly recommend it.

Still not exactly sure what happen other than I have a broken rod on #2 and three tossed rockers also on #2. And one lifter that popped out of its whole. Im pretty sure the lifters were tossed prior to the rod breaking.
I will get it rebuilt over the winter and we will be back. Looking to put a 62mm turbo into the low 8`s with out nitrous next year.

You guys running steel or aluminum rods? Probably tossed the rockers when the rod broke because the piston hit the valves.

Sorry to hear, but you guys have a good handle on getting good times out of that setup, and I’m sure you’ll be back and faster next year.

Aluminum rods. That is a reasonable conclusion and one I consider. The only thing that keeps me from that deduction 100% is the car stopped making power at 8200rpm in 3rd gear. Rpms stopped climbing and just flatlined. About 3 seconds later it came apart. That has me believing the rockers tossed first dropping power then something caused a rod to break. 3 rockers tossed all cylinder 2. Two of them exhaust and one intake. If the rod broke first then power would have nose dived right them as the car would shut right down.

I will be rebuilding a new motor over winter just like I had. It was a good set up. My biggest fear is one of my hard to get JUN 272 cams was hurt enough that it wont polish out.

Not sure what rods you have but there is a popular brand I stay away from for this specific reason. I don’t publicly bash, but I’ll answer questions in a pm if you want.

It’s also imperative that you don’t engine brake to slow down. A driver did that several times and stretched the rods around .030” in one of my blocks.

I use the same rods Aaron Greggory and Devin Shultz uses. Throwing a auto in neutral at the top end of the track is a bad idea. Its a good way to turn a trans into a grenade.

Drive into the chute, don’t slow down with the engine. At least get on the brakes.

I know how this stuff works, I’ve been working with a guy from 11’s all the way to 7’s. The same block and trans that was in the car when he broke into the 9’s last year was in it when he ran 7’s this year. And he runs the car a lot in no preps.

Hey Tom, thanks for posting a recap for your WCF experience. It's got to be pretty frustrating not knowing what happened when a motor lets go and it doesn't make sense why. But I guess sometimes that's just how it goes. Will you be rebuilding it the same way? Any major set up changes in the plans?

I was just looking at the results of this years event and it’s pretty clear that from Wild Street down is perfectly setup for a Honda to succeed. Just the amount of Civics qualifying and dominating those classes would make me; if I was the event organizer, take a better look at what the Civics have in common that is helping their success. Now I know this sounds like a sore loser talking but the results speak for their selves. I’m not familiar with the rules but something needs adjusted. Oh well maybe it’s due to the lack of DSM entries. Hopefully we as a community can keep this car culture alive and possibly grow in the future. The cost to build a competitive DSM is definitely a major factor for me. I’ve got a 95 Civic hatch that if I invested $2000 I guarantee it would outrun my 98 GSX if I invested $5000 into. It seems like the aftermarket parts are increasing in price rather than the normal decrease in cost.

Wonder what would they do to make it more difficult for Hondas in that class and help DSMs though? What are some limitations for DSMs that could be opened up so they could be more competitive?

I don't envy the people who get to try and make it competitive across platforms in any sanctioned racing series. That seems like an impossible task.

I love any DSM and truly believe competitively they’re at a disadvantage for numerous reasons, but, saying that I don’t think they are the only cars at a disadvantage to the Honda. Honda has always been a cheaper, easier platform for tuners to obtain. Lightweight cars, millions of people tuning them for decades, throw in a couple other necessary keys to success and you end up unintentionally creating the perfect race car for a specific race. Therefore pretty much any other car that has to race in a class that is regulated to being any type of “street” is at a huge disadvantage. Obviously I completely agree that I have no idea what to do to fix it and don’t know if an existing car can consistently compete with a Honda even if it were given a little advantage.
What’s everybody else thoughts?

No changes engine wise. I'm rebuilding the motor just like it was.
I will be switching over to a Haltech. That's the only major chage for this coming season aside from some visual changes.

When you get a chance, please do post a profile for the car - which will auto create a build thread. Then we can follow along as you do the work on the car :) I love following builds like this.

@Ludachris - I think one of the main advantages that hondas have over dsms is that their cylinder head design is really good in comparison. Most of the honda heads I've seen have a really smooth entry to the back side of the valve, vs. DSM usually has a turn the air must take. This alone accounts for hp/liter being really strong on Hondas.

I know this is kinda unrelated, but I also participate in the Supra communities.... and I've found that there has been a shift in the past few years away from people using non vvti engines to using VVTI engines. The guys that "knew everything" before with static cam engines are now saying that VVTI is superior in every way. Hondas have had VTEC, as much as we like to joke about it, for a very long time and anyone that's tuning it properly will have a fatter power band than not. Then, it's a matter of putting the traction down, so if they have a good setup for keeping traction, and a fat power band, a light car, etc..... that is very hard to compete with.

Look at how Kiggly has been using MIVEC on a DSM for nearly 10 years now. I went to the Shootout in 2010 and he had a MIVEC setup on his car back then. Anyone that wants to say this isn't an edge over the competition is sorely mistaken. I think the lesson we can all learn here is, "Don't be that guy that loves carburetors and trash talks boost." I've seen many DSM people guilty of acting just like this with different terms. Think about how everyone says the 6 bolt block is "the best".... yet a 2g block has a lighter rotating assembly. Every EVO uses a 7 bolt engine.... they aren't the "trash" that 2G owners treated them like for so many years.

Anyway, sorry to get off on a tangent. I hope that people wake up and stop using social media all together. It's a garbage waste of time, to put it lightly.... and I think many of the true car guys have been, and will continue to use the forums. Social media is an absolutely terrible platform for sharing useful information. And, I was thinking too.... people do benefit off of information being shared on social media, it's just not the people that should benefit, it's the people running the social media platform.

Remember highschool economics class teaches us that there is no such thing as a free lunch. So, how can social media membership and applications be "free"? They aren't. Ok, I'll put the tin foil sombrero down now.
