I'm looking at an $8k paint job on my 1991 1Ga Talon or doing carbon parts, thinking carbon fiber.

The doors, power window aspect working, locks e.t.c? 3 hours each seem realistic?

The rear carbon hatch, the factory window go in ok, how long, any long term issues?

Anyone with the wiper cowl, factory wiper arms work fine in conjunction?

Thanks

8 grand for a paint job on a car worth less seems a bit excessive. You can get a good quality paint job from a good local shop for under 4k.
Dont bet on it, I was quoted 8k myself when I decided to paint my own car, that was with ME supplying the materials and zero body work to be done, with a carbon fiber hood that didnt need painted, and a sunroof that takes up most of the roof, and a hatch that was mostly glass, thats when I said its time to learn to paint!

Jesus, were they painting it gold? I'm getting mine painted in May for my bday and I'm stressed about either doing it myself or paying someone. I honestly wouldn't even drop 4k on one. My goal is to get it at $1500 and I know it won't be perfect.

Tell me about it, and this was not just one shop that gave me that quote, and these are not by any means franchises with a brand name behind them or something, just good local shops that do insurance work, and walk in work for people, of course that's when I said well its time to buy a really good gun and learn to paint, and I'm glad that I did, its been rewarding knowing that I have done every piece of work on my car, when the compliments come, although I am humble, I still appreciate them because I know exactly how much work it is, and also where every flaw is whether anyone else notices them or not.

You can paint it yourself for less than $550.
Not really, the paint and a good clear alone will be that much. Not to mention lots of shop supplies, towels, sandpaper, primer, solvents, etc.

But yeah, learning to do it yourself is the way to go.

Well I had most of this stuff already laying around, so I guess it would be more expensive for him. Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't consider it. It can still be done for less than $1000 for sure.

Carbonetics looks like they make nice products, but the wait time is unbelievable. Who has 18-20 weeks to wait for CF parts? You would be better off buying a CF hood from someone else and painting the rest of the car.
i guess that really comes down to time frame on the project. for me if i ordered a hood from them and it took that long not too big of a deal as the hood already on the car does fine just ugly. now i can understand if you're trying to do things on a deadline that changes things up a bit. I've noticed that a lot of people that complain about the wait times but when they finally receive the parts they have nothing but good things to say about the quality.

I'd do the CF parts, take some classes on how to be extra patient, and vinyl wrap it when the parts finally came in. :) Hopefully the plans don't change while you're waiting for the parts.
Do you mean wrap the CF parts? Or the remainder of the body?

Basically, don't ever go in with a deadline. For example, I want to have the car ready for xyz event because you'll be f***ed. He's not going to rip you off and close up shop, but if he gets some high dollar supra/evo order then f*** your little dsm. Back of the line.

holy f*** the cheap asses. Yes, you can paint a car for $550, but it's gonna likely be done in valspar tractor paint from rural king, or done with the absolute bottom of the barrel automotive paint, and have next to no prep work done.

for real, a car that needs any body work will eat up $550 in sandpaper, filler, and surfacer alone.

I sell paint, and I suppose for $550 you could get a gallon of surfacer, and a gallon of single stage white. That leaves you no extra, and no monet for masking materials, sand paper, prep solvent, buffining supplies, ect.

Anyway, back to the op. Paint it unless it's a showcar.

Did you even read the next 2 posts after that?

Agreed, my gun alone was more than $600, the paint and clear was $1000 for Dupont paint and Hok clear, but I wanted to have the best chance of success.

Fixed it for you, as I never did get my parts at all and he simply quit responding to me about any of it, this was after paying him like 70% down for a deposit on a group buy piece, so he is very capable of screwing you over just to let anyone considering doing business with him know, in my case it was only a few hundred dollars or less, but I cant imagine spending thousands with someone like that and having him dip out and do shady business with me on a large purchase, I would be buying me a plane ticket and a hotel room for a weekend...

$600 for a gun? :ohdamn: I paid less than $50 and it sprays flawlessly! There is nothing wrong with it! I'm about to quote Mark Twain on everybody's dumb-asses! :p

Also a possibility is you can rent professional paint equipment from Home Depot or reputable paint companies, That is my plan of attack when I go to paint my interior since I don't see needing to have $3K worth of painting gear sitting around looking pretty for one paint job.

My vote is on a professional wrap job though, especially if you go with CF parts.

Also there is actually a huge difference between $50 and $600 guns. I was doing research on them because I was bored and if you are an anal retentive person, it makes a huge difference with even spread and beading and other technical painters jargon I don't understand. Youtube it, if you are curious or bored, it is actually kinda fascinating

Whoa this thing took off, LOL. I'll explain a little, I'm a second owner, have a ton invested in this car and plan to keep it probably another 3+ years until a killer looking/performing electric AWD coupe hits the market.

The $8k was down to metal, fixing both rear quarters for rust with new metal work and about a 2 week total time frame.

The things I like about the carbon route was no future rust, looked unique, $7500 in parts and about $1000 install. Resale on a carbon Dsm would be higher I think but I could be wrong.

5-6 month's wait is what it is, I planned on doing it in stages anyways just in case I didn't like it or things went south with Carbonetics.

I'm really curious about those with the carbon doors, that parts swap over and almost daily like driving concerns me. I mean do the windows really hold up over time and function, locks work etc?
