It’s supposed to have space. Where did you get it from? The only place I have had luck with besides OEM has been NAPA. Anywhere else (autozone, advance, etc) they are too long, or too short. There are a few threads on this site documenting it. It’s also been my own personal experience.

I thought so.

It was the stock one. That's concerning, if the stock one rubs then something must be wrong? I can check the new one to see if it is rubbing too, but when I compared them they were the same lengths so it most likely is.
 
Check the end play on your crank. If the thrust bearings get worn [ crank walk ] your crank can make contact with your crank sensor.
Are you thinking of the 4G63? Crank walk hasn't been a big concern with the 420A engine, and the 420A's crank sensor is perpendicular to the crank's axis or rotation, so a thrust bearing failure wouldn't bring the crank any closer to the sensor.
