Erik, I'm not quite sure that's from a DSM at all. The one for the AWD trans is more triangular and the one for the FWD looks similar to yours, a bit more rounded, but is completely flat and doesn't have that extra hole. Could this be from a 420a? Or a random other car you've had before?

Otherwise yes, the plate goes on after the trans is mounted to the block, but BEFORE you put the transfer case on, you'll have trouble reaching some of the bolts and putting it in place if you put the trans case on first.

I think you're right. I think it's not from my DSM. Oops. :D Solved.

I never had the inspection cover then. Can I just make one out of sheet metal?

I think you'll be able to make a simple cover out of sheet metal, but it would help if you can get a rough trace or stencil first. CAPS says the part number is different for the 89-90' AWD but my gut feeling tells me a 91-99' AWD plate will fit just fine. So if your Talon has that plate, maybe take it off and use it as a guide? Here's a part number that you can go by: MD191171 although I think it's not an expensive part so you should be able to get it from most DSM shops.

It’s dome shaped in the center. If you can get that done, then yes.
