Hey whats up folks. My name is Jourdain Keel. I'm a 21 year old novice "mechanic". I'm currently working on a 96 GSX for my weekend/track car. I'm not a full time mechanic so I tend to spend hours looking through the forums trying to learn what mods or mechanical things I have to get my car running. As of now the car has high school budget written all over it. Cheap headlights, cheap intercooler piping, fake HKS BOV, sliced and diced engine wiring harness, etc. The big issues I am having is sputtering or hesitation when starting it up an when idling. I'm already looking into replacing the coil pack and/or replacing one of the capacitors in the ECU. I'm also grinding and popping out of 2nd gear. It's alot of work but I think it is well worth it. I'll have to post pictures onto the thread when I get back from my TDY. I plan on upgrading the fuel system and turbo to get it to run between 430-450 whp. Thanks

-Jay

Switch to a 98'-99' style ecu, they are more reliable without the leaking caps and have a better processor. Welcome to the show!!!

I don't think the "black box" ECU's (98-99) can except DSMLink though. They will use software like Evoscan, Ceddymods and a tatrix cable for tuning for those, just to point it out.

Boost leak test it. I had sputtering when starting up/idling when I had a vacuum leak. If it's just a leak, will be a much simpler fix than an ECU capacitor, does your ECU look like it fried?
I'm not sure yet. I haven't ripped into the car quiet yet. I bought it in July and it's been sitting in my garage since. I'll defiantly dig through the classifieds if that's the case. Thank you!

Hey Jourdain. I just joined the group as well. I have 1 '99 Spyder GS n/t (4G64). Have been replacing things here and there over the 3 week period I have owned it. The other night my engine would crank but as soon as the key went to "RUN" position it would shut right off.
I checked the ignition switch, it was good to go. Changed the Fuel filter, it needed it anyway, car has been sitting for 20 yrs. That seemed to solve the issue of the engine not staying on. So, I thought. Last night it would crank but I would have to rev the engine to 2k rpms for it to stay on. Idling wonky. Just shuts off sometimes while stopped.
Im changing the negative battery cable this weekend and cleaning or replacing the MAF if it is burnt. Trying everything I can before I replace the ECU. Ill be following. Good luck!
