I purchased a 6 bolt block from someone already bored to 85.5 but never run, I swapped the pistons it came with to Wiseco HD's and am taking it to the machine shop.

My goal is the have them measure and clean the block and add clearance to the cylinders for the new pistons. (both sets are the same bore, new ones require more clearance)

What else should i ask about and what should i bring?
  • Rods
  • Pistons
  • Crank
  • Kiggly Girdle
  • Bearings
  • Main Caps
  • Hardware
  • Anything else?
The shop is known for doing DSM's and has a good reputation.

Wiseco hd’s Will have more clearance in an 85.5 bore than a standard wiseco piston for an 85.5 bore. If you start honing it much you’ll end up with .006” plus ptw clearance.

If you’re going to build an engine buy some tools like a mic set and bore gauge.

I was hoping they would tell me what i need, are you saying buy the tools and learn how to do it to double check there work.

I'm going to have them measure it first then based on that tell me if I need more honing for clearance or if it is fine.

I am in the process of rebuilding my DSM motor. Helped my dad rebuild some Chevy small blocks and Ford motors back in the day, but this is my first solo rebuild.

When I did mine, I got ahold of a quality bore gauge and micrometer to measure the block before and after the machine shop. The tools are pretty straightforward. Just take your time and use the YouTube for tutorials. If they specialize in DSMs, they probably know what they’re doing. I just sleep better at night knowing the measurements of my motor.
In general, it’s probably always a good rule of thumb to double-check a shop’s work. They’re humans too.

I also had the shop balance my rotating assembly, so along with above mentioned parts, bring: harmonic balancer and everything that goes with it (t-belt gear, BS gear, the plate, etc.), clutch pressure plate and flywheel (and flywheel bolts).

Both donniekak and bastardDSM know their DSM stuff and have posted a ton of good advice on here over the years.

It’s going to need honed for rings just to meet the ra requirements of the new rings. If they take out much at all you’ll have race spec clearances.

I have std bore wisecos in my car. After taking about .001” out of the bores to clean them up I’m around .0055” ptw clearance. If I let my car warm up for a minute it’s fine though.

The block has never been run before, only bored with internals installed.

Think it still needs a hone or just a good cleaning.

This is a weekend warrior so if my clearances are a little loose I should still be good? I'm running my car at 25psi now on stock 7 bolt internals, i'm gonna run 28psi on this new engine until i get my HX40 then go up. Thoughts?

It Depends on the rings. Different rings require a different surface finish on the inside of the cylinder. The finish I use for a 1,000+ hp race engine would never seat a chrome, moly, or iron ring. Some rings of the same material will have a different facing on the top ring as well.

I would take the spec sheet for the rings to the machinist and tell him to set up that finish to .0045”-.005” clearance.

Ok will do
