Doing a timing belt on the motor for my laser, and noticed that the camshaft notch thingys were not at the top as they should be. So, my question is, to get them to the top to properly get the notches at the top, which way should I rotate each cam to make sure no valves are bent. When i did a timing belt on my wrx, the cam shafts could only be turned one way, so I'm sure a 4g63 is the same way. And yes i know I need to rotate the crank also, and figured that since the engine moves clock wise, that the crank should too. Am I correct on this? Thanks in advance!

the marks shouldnt be at the top. they meet eachother in the middle. If they are at the top when the crank is tdc the valves might not be bent. the car must run like crap tho... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/362879-1g-4g63-timing-belt-install.html i just did the belt on my car. the cams should have marks on both sides(2 marks per cam) make sure the pin side is up. the marks wont line up strait across with a ruler as they appear to in all the images. they line up with the cylinder head. if you did place a ruler on a properly installed 1g timing belt the center marks should be just below the line. it is easy to check the oil pump by taking a bolt out of the backside of the engine between cylenders 2 and 3 and inserting a screw driver to check the depth. dont skip that. also the crank should only be rotated clockwise.

Cam dowels located near center of sprockets should be top. Marks on gear edge should form straight line through center of gears here a pic. Dont pay attention to the crank mark on my pic. It looks off but i know the crank is TDC on your crank it should be lined 90° to the right forming an L with the oil pump sprocket mark.

Like mentioned, the cam dowels need to be straight up and the timing marks need to be lined up between the two gears. If your worried about bending valves, just set the crank timing notch about 90º past the timing mark on the engine. That will set the pistons about half way down the cylinders.

And yes i know I need to rotate the crank also, and figured that since the engine moves clock wise, that the crank should too.

also the crank should only be rotated clockwise.

I've never found any merit to this, at least with the 4g63. The profile of the cams can make them difficult to turn in reverse, so if they have to go far I'd suggest rotating them clockwise. But otherwise your not going to hurt anything.

You have to rotate the exhaust cam clockwise to match with the other cam. Your welcome

After 6 years I'm assuming that the original poster has figured it out.
