Hi all,

Figured this would be a good place to drop this question regarding automatic transmission supporting components. I'm very new to the Auto side of the DSM world, but with higher power goals and depleting manual parts (along side a fiance that really doesnt enjoy a quartermaster 7.25) Im starting to dig into whats needed to convert a manual to auto.

Question: Are the supporting parts from an auto the same from 2g GST's to GSX's? Shifter and cables, starter plate, harness, TCU ect. Obviously the trans is different, and the GST lacks the T case and Diff. I ask because I'm having a tough time finding an AWD parts cars near me, but there are plenty of FWD. It would make life easier if I could ship a trans, case and diff while sourcing the remaining parts locally from FWD cars.

Now I have read over 4wa33.com and atdsm.com, getting the gears turning, soaking up all the information as I go. Not asking what parts are needed, just whats compatible.

Thanks Tuners!

2g AWD and FWD auto starter plates are the same.
PM sent.

You can adapt just about any of our years TCU's if you need to. The AWD have different shift patterns than the FWD's. I have an article on a standalone TCU that I like. Forced Fours SmartShift 100.1.

The newest update has alot of options not covered in my article. I just had my firmware upgraded and it has alot of new features that I am investigating.
A stock TCU will cost less but that box is completely controllable with your laptop. :thumb:
I just bought a 2nd power cable for it so I can sit inside with my laptop and a power supply and play/program it. :sneaky:

1990TSIAWDTALON, I had found your reviews yesterday and read through. Very good resource, thank you for taking the time to put them together. I'm working on choosing the right forced4 shift box for my application, although I'll probably just grab the 100.1, always room to learn more!

Choose what is best for your application. I wanted a real "automatic" so I went with the 100.1
I love the auto upshift feature for track purposes. It will shift when you program it to in any gear when in that mode. It worked well at our local Street Drags last year, when I had a bone stock 92 and had it shifting at 6k with the cute little 13b turbo....that is changing drastically, but the box worked great at that event and had me out running 2010 Camaro SS's in the 8th mile. They would have got me in the 1/4, but not the 1/8th, it was fun!!!
The SmartShift box is very small too. It is about the size of a cell phone only thicker, so it can be placed behind the radio very easy, or anywhere else you would like to mount it.

If you get the shiftbox think of how your going to shift gears, i have a roadsurge and i hated the handheld unit, so its nice to shift yourself but not always nice holding a case to do it, the 100.1 is a good upgrade and i believe can still work with the tcu on a toggle switch for stock or controlled,

If im not mistsken the flywheel and starters are different on awd and fwd autos, i remember this from when i nearly ordered the wrong starter for my fwd auto.

Pretty sure you are right Bobby, but the starter plate itself is the same. Thanks for the input!!!

I cannot comment on that as i have never looked into the auto awd vs fwd plates, i know they different on the manuals but its why i never confirmed or denied the plates LOL, dont wish to give out bad info if i dont know.

This is what i just found but it might be 1G specific as they never confirmed in this thread https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/awd-vs-fwd-motor-plate.370871/#post-152209688

Here is where I got the info from:

Plans are to throw together some type of paddle shifter. Ive read its possible to adapt an Evo8 (or evo10) steering wheel/clock/paddles into a DSM. When I get the time and appropriate parts, Ill have to take photos along the way and document the process. Seems to be very little information from what I've found on paddle shifting. Again, thank for the information and resources.

Only a few of us use paddles,

You can use the 3G shifter with tiptronic and also attach paddles to that so they dont always activate.
Using the evo wheel is easy to do and a few write ups on that with fitting etc.
