i am kind of at a loss, i changed my waterpump, timing belt, auto tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, balance shaft tensioner pulley and the balance shaft belt, and when i start it up it sounds ok, but if i rev it to 2K rpm and let off, once it hits 1250 or so, it makes a fluttering whine noise, i think it is waterpump related, because when i listen when i accelerate, the whine is in time with engine speed, i thought maybe when i took off my lower crank sensor to get the balance shaft belt on ( i dont even know if it was necessary) and put it back on, i didnt gap it so it was rubbing, but i dont think that is the problem now that i tore it apart and looked, because it would be hard to gap it if the backplate goes in between the 2 magnets, so i think it is my waterpump, because i spun it with my hand and it makes somewhat of a whine

is there a period where the waterpump bearings have to break themselves in? i really dont know, my old waterpump spun freely, no noise... i did buy a napa waterpump, brand new, says it is multiple stage tested and will supply many miles of use.. but that doesnt mean shit... i have it about to the point where i started at with installing my timing belt, so if anyone has any ideas, i will be glad to look into them, i have put on about 100 miles and it still makes noise.

i dont have my AC belt on (got the car like that) my harmonic balancer is fine, i replaced that about 5 months ago? maybe it was 4, it isnt separated, i know that, my power steering fluid level is fine too, i really can't think of anything, i still do need to get new alternator and power steering pump drive belts, i have had to haul my sister to work with me every night, so i can't go anywheres without bringing her home.. kind of pissing me off, i was going to put things together without the timing belt covers on and see if i could hear it better, but i dont know if thats a safe thing to do.. it'd be nice to have a second ear listen to it, so maybe they could throw some ideas out there... we'll see i guess.

I'm gonna go alt. on this one. Fluttering whine would be a good description of your alternator going.

well i know that my belt would make a slight slipping noise if i had the lights on, and the fan blowing on high, and then if i pulled on the window switch and held it up, it would start doing it, do you think it could just be the belts? the alternator belt has cracks on it, and a small chunk missing, i think i am going to pick up new belts tomorrow.

What are the symptoms for your water pump is needing replaced? I know my car makes a sound from the waterpump area that gets louder with higher rpm and could almost sound like bad lifter tick. I was told that it was my waterpump, could someone maybe confirm this for me and tell me what could happen if I don't get it replaced soon?

well if it goes out on you, then your not going to get any pressure in your cooling system, it might leak out of the bearing and you'll have coolant coming out there, i dont really know any symptoms, i replaced mine with my timing belt so it was good to go and i wouldnt have to worry about it...

There will be a small leak from the driver side of the car. When a water pump starts to go bad, it will leak out of the "weap" hole that is located on the actual water pump. As far as symptoms go, you will possibly see a leak, or you could being running warm or even overheating because of a bad pump. My pump was going bad at one point. I was losing coolant through my "weap hole" and because of that I was overheating. I didn't take a chance to keep running my car with a bad waterpump. I would replace it as soon as possible.

sounds like you just need to tension the alt belt more, those are exact symptoms that you've described, whining with rpm.....

alrihgt, i just changed the power steering belt and alternator belt, and it still does it, i tightened them up, i am not concerned about the whining anymore, i don't mind it that much, its the fluttering noise at 1200 rpm that makes me embarassed to drive my car, i get enough crap about my car being a piece of shit.. just because i didnt drive it for 2 weeks... fricken people now days.. anyways, i am thinking of letting a mechanic in town look at it, i am sure he can single it down to something.. at least i hope so...
