Hey all, I'm Matt, a long time car lover (since before F&F) LOL.

I have been active in the euro scene mostly since the late 90's. Here is a list of cars I've owned throughout the years in case anyone cares.

'86 Saab 9000 turbo
'84 Volvo 240
'90 Volvo 740
'89 BMW 525i
'94 Jeep Grand Cherokee
'99 Audi A6
'86 BMW 325i coupe
'96 Jeep Grand Cherokee
'08 BMW 135i
'87 BMW 325i convertible
'03 Porsche 911 turbo
'02 VW Passat wagon
'09 BMW 328i wagon
'90 BMW 530i
'11 VW Jetta wagon TDI
'14 MINI Cooper S
'18 Ford F-150 diesel

This brings us to current. So now, why am I on this forum?
My best friend from high school and college was also a car nut (go figure,) and he had a '96 Eagle Talon ESI 5 speed that he dailied and autocrossed. Unfortunately he passed away in 2010 and his mom gave me his car. I was moving around in the Army at the time so I left it in Virginia with my dad for him to drive as a gas saver until I could bring it down to Texas where I call home. This July, 9 years later, it's finally home with me.

The car is rough...I mean really rough. If it didn't have sentimental value no one would have kept it alive this long except my dad was nice enough to keep it running all this time which is all I asked. I've been lurking on this forum for about as long just keeping a distant eye on the DSM scene. Even though I'm a euro guy at heart, I've always respected the other car cultures. I remember when the 2g first hit the streets thinking it was so futuristic and exotic/expensive looking. I also remember driving a friend's new GS-T as well as a GT-3000 and thinking the dsm was way more fun.

The interior is trash, every body panel needs work/replaced, and the suspension is probably original from '96 LOL. My plan is to slowly bring it back to OEM + glory. Starting with mechanical, then suspension/wheels, then interior, and finishing up with the most costly, body work. Maybe after all that is done I'll turbo the 420A or look into some swap options.

Welcome Matt. Looks like you've had some pretty cool projects throughout the years.

The 2g non-turbo DSM doesn't have much of a following these days, though there are some out there modding them. Putting a turbo kit on the 420A is far easier and requires far less fabrication than doing a 4G63 swap obviously. No swap is going to be very straight forward with that car, but if you have the money and the skills you could do it.

Thanks for posting, and hope you enjoy this project no matter what direction you go.

Good luck on the restoration! I'm doing some of that myself as you know. :) I have had a hard time finding some of my broken or missing parts so far. I hope it goes easier for you, though the hunt can be a lot of fun, and when you do find the part, it feels like you've really accomplished something LOL. That, I think, is the main thing when restoring/building a car, just make sure it stays fun.

Again, best of luck, and I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I think its really cool that you are keeping his car going.
