Hello fellow DSM r's, question for anybody who has done this. How hard from 1 to 10 in your opinion is switching from a T25 turbo to a Evo 3 16g turbo? Along with the fuel pump etc.. any honest opinions would be super helpful thanks guys have a good one :)

If it were a snake, it would have bit you. Also if a word gets a red line under it, just right click on the word to change it to a suggested word :)
I did chuckle at the reply but knew exactly what you meant!

The edit feature doesn't work from my iphone.

I forgot the phone app doesn't show all the features. And maybe because I'm a Mod, I have some things that aren't normally displayed.
Do you have this feature? I use it alot to correct grammar on folks posts.

As someone who is new to working on cars, and has done most of the albeit basic level work on my dsm, I will agree that the job difficulty can vary with experience, tools, and any snags you run into while working. All the work I have done has been "easy" it just ended up taking me a longer time becuabe I was learning, double checking the guides online, and running to the store to get tools or parts. I haven't swapped a turbo yet but I imagine if you follow vfaq and all the other guides it won't be "hard". What will is like everyone else said when you break bolts or realized there was a part you forgot to buy before starting and have to wait for it to arrive.
For example I am in the process of installing my feal coilovers and replacing some control arms/other suspension pieces. Knowing what I needed to do wasn't hard, it was when the swaybar end nuts were being a pain or the ball joint nut wouldn't come off even with my impact that I got annoyed. But I figured it all out and got it done. It certainly took me longer than it would take most on here I would imagine but that's ok. I am still learning. The other thing is don't be afraid to take a break if you get frustrated. Sometimes pushing through leads to getting sloppy and rushing. Taking it at an easy pace makes the process much more enjoyable.
For me it's all in gaining new experience and enjoying restoring my car.

The hardest part of anything you do is problem solving. Its best to take steps to avoid the known problems. If broken bolts are a regular problem I would just try to avoid that happening. If you are going to be spending money with the turbo and all the other stuff, just get the things that cause problems new. Its not like you are just changing a gasket or something.

Being in the flooring industry and how hard it is to LVT is to work with sometimes depending on the locking system, I am not going to fight trying to get something locked in by a door jam and I will cut out some of the locking mechanism and glue it together. Why fight something that you know is going to be a problem, which is where the question of difficulty comes in where people can say where there are problem areas and just give an overall difficulty level even if its just based on their own experience. You could then take all those, average them out to see how difficult it could possibly be.

Also these cars are at least 20 years old at this point so bolts sheering off inside of a hole I would say is a given.

Ultimately the question that you should ask is to yourself, are you willing to deal with problems when they arise or not? If yes then take your time, learn and go for it.

Just replace it all to make it easier, like this that I am doing (just kidding, but showing that there could be a lot harder things to do other than a pretty easy turbo change) :)
I'll be adding these to my profile today if I have time. Things can be fun and exciting even if you are just learning. That's the key, learning!
And making things PRETTY :thumb:

If you leave your manifold in a extra set of hands is nice I just swaped mine due to shaft play but the worst part was trying to hold it and start the bolts. Also it's not nessecary but pulling the radiator will give alot more room to wiggle it out past the manifold and its a perfect excuse to clean it out.

Man those fabricated exhaust manifolds are gorgeous. I almost pulled the trigger on an archer fab exhaust manifold just because it is a work of art, but I got an FP for dirt cheap.

As for tuning English Racing is in Vancouver, WA so if you want the best of the best touching your car it is about an 6 hour drive up from San Fran.

Also the upgrade path thread has been my best friend over the last year while I work on acquiring parts for my Holset HX35 swap. I did pass on upgrading my cams while I was getting my head rebuilt- which I now regret. But I think as long as you're patient and genuinely enjoy working on your car even if it makes you cry, even if it makes you so angry you punch the AC condenser and cause an AC leak; then I think you will be good to roll.
