Getting the block checked and cleaned pretty sure this is it’s first re hone along with a crank polish. Any suggestions on budget friendly pistons and rings? I heard always go OE on the oil pump but I heard mixed reviews on aftermarket pistons.

Been awhile since last update. Machine shop is drowning in big block projects but shout out to area machine in Denver. Got me a cleaned up block with a new hone. Now on to parts, parts and more parts.

New pistons came in. You can really tell the old ones needed to go. Trying to stay budget friendly so not OE so hopefully I’m not paying for it in the long run.

They've seen some valves up close it appears.
I've used npr pistons like those before, nothing wrong with them.

Keep at it!

I second both of those statements!
I have a long block with NPR's in it on a stock 6 bolt rebuild on the stand right now.
If it isn't too late, I would suggest decking the block so you have a true flat surface before you put it back together but that is up to you. I deck all of my blocks and heads always get a resurface job for a good seal.

Pistons back and ready to go in. Checking ring gap and if anyone can help out I got a few ?’s. I always heard gap is supposed to be on the looser side due to it being boosted, however what is actual ring spec? I show 6 bolt as .0098 to .0177 for top and .0138 to .0197 for ring #2. If you look up in some tech articles like road race they’re stating much higher ring gap closer to service limit (.024). Also my cylinders aren’t at the service limit for oversized pistons but my gaps are coming in varied by as much as .003 from cylinder to cylinder on gap. Is it beneficial to gap them evenly or is it not worth the time? Thanks for the feedback.

Well… been along time since last post, 1 new kid, one kid off to college and one more 6 bolt in need of repair. But that’s for another build. Got the rings fitted to the pistons and the mains torqued and plastigaged. .050 with standard main bearings and an OEM crank with a polish. The build is going good I ended up using stm tuned for new oil squirter washers mine were old and in need of replacing. So on hold until next weekend. More to come I’ve got a balance shaft delete for the block and a fuel pump re wire kit. Thank you for all the comments and recommendations they have definitely been put to good use and hopefully have a video of a first start here soon.
